Randy Rhodes made two important decisions in his life. One saved his musical career, the other killed him. Rhodes was the original guitarist for Quiet Riot, and left the band to join Ozzy Osbourne. He was around when Ozzy hit it big with Blizzard of Oz and the follow up Diary of a Madman. Rhodes died when the plane he was in crashed while buzzing the house Osbourne was staying in on tour. When Rhodes left Riot, it changed from a metal band to a pop-rock/glam outfit that covered Neanderthal rockers Slade's attacks on the English language with hits like "Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Mama We're All Crazee Now." Obnoxious frontman Kevin DuBrow was fired soon after the hits stopped coming and formed his own version of the band which still tours and keeps the band's spectacularly dumb metal anthems in front of smaller groups, but no less enthusiastic fans. How could you turn down an opportunity to witness this precious morsel of heavy metal history? Be at Jillian's in Raleigh Saturday, Oct. 26. Call 821-7887 for details. --Grant Britt DiamondDiamondDiamondBefore the Carrboro-based pop noir musicians of Jackie O. Pillbox (pictured) send Jesse off into retirement (see "In retirement parties, below), they'll celebrate the release of their first CD, Sing Along With ... , at the suitably eccentric Ringside in Durham Saturday, Oct. 26. JOP features trumpet, vibraphone, acoustic bass, nylon-string guitar and a female vocalist performing original tunes that have been described as "delightfully uncategorizable." The CD release party will also feature The Theater of Performing Objects--a group of Triangle artists that uses marionettes, sound and video montage and robots--performing "The Loss of Leopard Pudding," and Zen Satan, a writer/artist collaboration that "combines language and image to encourage pessimistic enlightenment." The night promises to be deliberately bizarre--definitely worth the time. Call 680-2100 for details.
