It's a toss-up as to what grabs you first on Caitlin Cary's full-length debut, While You Weren't Looking: the varied, expertly crafted sounds or the confident, detail-rich writing. Musically, there are tastes of Carole King-styled pop, Dusty in Memphis countrified soul and folk rock a la Linda Thompson. And, needless to say, Cary (pictured) and the Triangle-heavy all-star band she's assembled can sure enough rock when the mood strikes. But you're also going to want to pay attention to the words so you can experience both a cold Southern night and a hot State Fair day--without even leaving the building. Join Cary and crew to celebrate their CD release and see them off on a monthlong national tour this Friday, April 12, at 10 p.m., at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. Thad Cockrell and the Starlite Country Band open. Call 821-4111 for details. --Rick Cornell

DiamondDiamondDiamondIf Caitlin Cary's show wets your whistle for alt-country, there's also a staggering double bill at Humble Pie that evening that should go late, featuring The Bottle Rockets and those local purveyors of mobile home culture and Dixie cuisine, Southern Culture on the Skids. The Bottle Rockets, after an internal band scuffle at the SXSW Music Fest last month, are down to a trio: They'll be playing songs spanning their decade-long career as well as tracks off their new CD, Songs of Sahm, a tribute to Sir Douglas Quintet's Doug Sahm. North Carolina's ambassadors of country-fried guitar rock, SCOTS, are legends 'round these parts: If there's anybody reading this who hasn't witnessed the quartet throw down, then get your about-to-be-witnessed-to backside to the Humble Pie, Friday, April 12. Call 829-9222 for details. --Angie Carlson
