In clubs

After the dissolution of their Creation Records deal back in '95, Slowdive's Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell continued to make music--minimalist, dreamy pop that sounded more like they'd been listening to Neil Young and members of the Giant Sand collective than Blur and the like. Calling themselves Mojave 3 (pictured), the four- or five-piece band is a showcase for Halstead's gently dazzling melodic lines and wryly self-deprecating lyrics. Goswell's vocals at times recall Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval with a dash of Lisa Germano. Last year's album, Excuses for Travelers, found Halstead singing most of the leads over a winning batch of '70s-flavored, desert rock compositions. With some of the Mojaves still living in Cornwall (Goswell's in London), it's a real treat that they're playing right here in Caroliny on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Cat's Cradle. --Angie Carlson
