Here's the big question mark about
Kila, the full-tilt Celtic reel-and-roll octet visiting the Triangle: How many
more cultures can they transplant into fertile Irish soil to join the ones already blooming in their music? On their latest American release,
Lemonade and Buns, Sephardic strains are clearly interwoven on tunes like "Andy's Bar," while the vocals on "Tine Lasta (Fire Alight)" and "An Tiománaí (The Driver)" suggest old-school reggae toasting to a different beat. Add didgeridoo and djembe for seasoning: the world in a reel, in short--and possibly a bit more than the
Thistle and Shamrock set might have bargained for. In partnership with NCSU's Center Stage series, Kila will perform this Friday, April 5 at N.C. State University's Stewart Theatre. Call 515-1100 for tickets.
