in bugging out

Now in its ninth year, the N.C. Museum of Natural Science's Bugfest annually transforms the downtown Raleigh treasure into a veritable ant colony for one summer day. Upwards of 15,000 people are expected to attend the 12-hour entomologic extravaganza, which runs into the evening hours for the first time this year, featuring a triumvirate of capital city musical favorites--Viswas Chitnis at 6 p.m., A Rooster for the Masses at 7 and STRANGE at 8--for hard-working, bug-adulating adults. The afternoon offers more than four dozen presentations and displays spread across the museum's four floors and outside plaza, and visitors will have opportunities to receive insect identification techniques, gardening tips and--of course--Antchiladas, Collard-Wrapped Grasshopper Fritters and Chocolate Chirp Cookies. Bee-bearded people, Discover Editor Josie Glausiusz and no charge--how can you resist the buzz?

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences is located in Raleigh at 11 W. Jones St. Bugfest 2005 hatches Saturday, Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.
