In 1998, MariJo Moore was honored with North Carolina's Distinguished Woman of the Year in Arts Award, and she has been named one of the top five American Indian writers of the new century by Native Peoples magazine. The part-Cherokee author's writings and collages stem from dreams and ancestral memories. Her latest collection of short stories, Red Woman with Backward Eyes (pictured), has been praised by the Asheville Citizen Times and the Greensboro News and Record, the latter of which had this to say: "Unlike other writers inside and outside the Indian community, who seem predisposed to retreat to the past in order to give the reader a romanticized view of Indian life, Ms. Moore confronts ... very real social issues." Moore will be reading from her new book at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh this Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. Call 828-1588 for details.
