Big Joe and the Dynaflos play jump blues the way it's 'spozed to be--big, loud and bodacious. But this is no bunch of trendy retro re-creators. Big Joe Maher was belting out the blues from behind his drum kit long before there was a swing craze.
"I was here before they came, and I'm here after they're gone," Maher proclaims.
What he does is recreate the jump blues era of the '40s and '50s. Maher writes original swing tunes that sound like they were hatched in some smoky dive in the '40's but are as vibrant as any of today's music.
"I Warned You Baby" is a high-steppin', barroom boogie that rattles all the bottles of beer on the wall. "Meet Me Half Way" sounds like Lieber and Stoller writing for Big Joe Turner. If your woogie is suffering from a shortage of boogie, "Boogie Woogie King" and "What About Your Daughter" will give you a needed transfusion that'll have you up and movin' around in no time. Put on your dancin' shoes--Big Joe is sure to get your Dynaflo in gear. Sponsored by Triangle Swing Dance Society. $11, $9 members. www.triangleswingdance.org.
