Look for soul-stirring sets to be sure on Friday, Aug. 12 at this downtown Durham gathering. Part of the Warehouse Blues Series presented by the City of Durham and the Music Maker Relief Foundation, this installment includes the melting-pot funk and roots of Tim Smith and his band, with some heavy blues howlers. Smith lent his multiple talents to the Jumpstarts and the Squirrel Nut Zippers over the years. But with his own group, which often includes members of the Dynamite Brothers, he gets loose on the reeds and presses hard on the down beat. It's body-movin' music, the best kind of universal funk.
Captain Luke and Macavine Hayes work two sides of the blues spectrum. Luke gets deep with his saucy baritone, keening his eyes with every inflected note, and Hayes pounds out an intangible primal trance. The show starts at 6 p.m. at 604 W. Morgan St. (near Main) and is free.
