Ever see one of those "I (Heart) Lemurs" bumper stickers and just shrug your shoulders? What's so great about lemurs, and, uh, what the hell are they anyway? Well if you go in for all that evolution stuff, they're our brothers. The Duke University Primate Center treats them like family by giving the prosimians a free-range forest to hang out in near Duke Forest--much more relaxing than their endangered environs in Madagascar. After discovering the center by chance, folks in the local pop band Velvet (pictured) decided to throw a party for the worthy institution--and you're invited. They've asked percussionist Jubal Creech from the Applejuice Orchestra and Winston-Salem rock trio Tommy Gun to play some tunes at an all-ages show at Durham's Basement, Saturday, Oct. 5, at 8:30 p.m. All proceeds from the Lemur Benefit go to the center. And there'll even be an information booth/traveling gift shop where you can find out how to sponsor your very own lemur and get one of those nifty bumper stickers.
