In benefits

People still talk about Confessor, about how they were the heaviest, most metal, of the early Raleigh scene that spawned Corrosion of Conformity and the like. But former Confessor guitarist Ivan Colon's sudden death in February at 32 left the local music scene--especially his old bandmates and gig buddies like COC--stunned and saddened. So it's only fitting that Raleigh's finest are reuniting for the Benefit for Ivan. The proceeds will go to Colon's wife of six months, Julie, and his parents, who were left with medical bills over and above what their insurance covered. Confessor's Cary Rowell told the Indy that the benefit will help pay for the costs of Colon's two open-heart surgeries. "I knew this guy since we were 15; we played together in bands--he was here and gone," Rowell said. When a virus got into Colon's bloodstream through a sinus infection and traveled to his heart, two weeks later band members were called saying that Colon was in a Greensboro hospital with 24 hours to live. From there Colon was taken to Duke, where doctors performed the open-heart surgeries and attempted to revive him in a desperate bid to save his life, "but the damage was done," Rowell says. As of press time, the lineup for the benefit is Man Will Destroy Himself, Bone Shelter, Leadfoot, a COC reunion featuring the Karl Agell, Phil Swisher, Reed Mullin and Woody lineup doing material off Blind, with the Confessor reunion closing the show. The benefit is this Sunday, April 21, at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh. Doors at 7 p.m.; music starts at 8 p.m. Call 821-4111 for details. --Angie Carlson
