The old Chatham Label Mill, a 1920s building that was once the leading manufacturer of woven garment labels, is also the site of an ongoing art project called Loom, which was conceived as a chance to develop creative works incorporating the building's history and artifacts and to "honor the spiritual essence of the space." Building owner Tom Roberts is supporting the art experiment, organized by a group of UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate art students. Loom's debut exhibition last December (see the Dec. 12, 2001 review, "Loom in Essence," available in the Indy archives) featured pieces that ranged from found-object art (created using everything from mill implements to dead insects) to a video installation, in a mix of student and professional pieces (visitors view Huong Ngo's "Z-web" in the photo). The show was such a success a spring art show, Loom 2, is planned, to open April 27. You can support the emerging art center this Friday, March 15, at the Loom Benefit Show at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. The event boasts an impressive musical lineup, including headliners Marquee Moon (a dead-on Television tribute group featuring former members of The White Octave), North Elementary, Work Clothes, The Dynamite Brothers and Choose Your Own Adventure. Doors open at 8 p.m. Call 967-9053 for details. --Angie Carlson
