In benefits

A Benefit for RAWA (the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan) will feature poetry, music and speaker Alicia Lucksted, a core American supporter of the group. It starts with spoken-word performances by Alix Olson and Amy Neevel, two slam poets from NYC, followed by Chuck Johnson playing solo. Regina Hexaphone (pictured), featuring Sara Bell (also of Shark Quest) will play, with Mr. Lady punk-femme trio The Butchies--the musical embodiment of women's power--ending the night. During the fundamentalist Taliban regime's reign in Afghanistan, RAWA pushed for such basic rights for women as education and medical care, as well as the right to have a career. The group has provided information and photos (often graphic) of the crimes against humanity committed in their country. Now, RAWA is trying to ensure that women are included in Afghanistan's interim government. To learn more about RAWA visit http://www.rawa.org. The benefit takes place Thursday, Jan. 10 at 9:30 p.m. at Kings in Raleigh.
