Pop the Cap, an organization dedicated to rewriting North Carolina's antiquated beer rules, is holding a Winter Warmer tasting and fund-raiser featuring a selection of specialty beers quashed by state laws from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Tyler's in Carrboro.
What has the hopsroot organization's members in a froth are rules set down shortly after the end of prohibition limiting specialty beers to six percent alcohol--a limit asked for by the state's textile barons to keep mill workers from over-imbibing and missing work. These days, Pop the Cap organizers say, all the rule does is limit the creativity of specialty beer makers. A $15 membership in the organization gets you in.
