As chief curator for Loom, an art show at the old Chatham Label Mill in Pittsboro, UNC-Chapel Hill student Jeffrey Waites has assembled an impressive list of over 25 Triangle artists and placed their work in an equally impressive environment. The Chatham Mill opened in the 1920s and housed the world's largest manufacturer of woven labels in the '60s and '70s. It's now in the process of renovation. Waites first looked at the mill about a year and half ago when he was looking for studio space, and learned from its owner, Tom Roberts, that it was going to take a while to get the space developed. When Waites asked Roberts about the possibility of putting up an exhibition in the 34,000 square foot mill, he found the owner very supportive: "He has been great in allowing the artists to use some of the found objects from the mill in our work." (Lauren Adams, working on a sculpture using glass rods from one of the old looms, is pictured.) Waites says the show has a number of themes, including "honoring the spiritual essence of the space" and the people who worked there. "The other idea was to meld a new community of artists with a past community, and to use the building as a creative act to sustain a new community, by doing an exhibition that would consider what the future of the building might be--could it house studios for artists?" Waites says. The show is also unique in that it's curated by UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduates. The opening reception on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 3-10 p.m., promises food and drink, a poetry reading, and performances by a jazz/blues band, the Paper Hand Puppet Intervention, and possibly even a church choir. The exhibition runs through Dec. 15. To find the Mill, take N.C. 15-501 to Pittsboro from Chapel Hill; the Mill is 1.6 miles past N.C. 64. For complete details, call 967-0684 or 542-3162.
