in & beyond turkey substitutes

Thanksgiving doesn't necessarily mean being confined indoors all day, though there's certainly nothing wrong with taking a day off to enjoy company at home or a trip to grandma's house. But, if you'd rather get out (or if you need to get out), there's no shortage of options. For food enthusiasts, the centerpiece of this year's full Thanksgiving Day plate may be the Triangle Vegetarian Society's 12th annual Thanksgiving Feast. For the seventh consecutive year, Café Parizade in Durham hosts the entirely vegan event, which features a dozen appetizers from wheatberry-wild rice salad and roasted exotic mushrooms to breads and crustinis, main courses of sweet potatoes, risotto and filo pie, and a wide assortment of desserts. They hope to eclipse last year's national record-setting total of 360 diners, so, if you haven't made reservations by the time you read this, you may want to visit and sign up for next year's extravaganza.

In movies, Just Friends, Rent and Yours, Mine & Ours all see Triangle releases mid-week. And plenty of bands pull into town, from DeYarmond Edison at Bickett Gallery on Wednesday to The (International) Noise Conspiracy at Cat's Cradle on Thursday and Pro-L, mixing turkey and Miller High Life like hip hop and a sitar, at Kings on Thursday.
