Hunker down with incense

With 80-degree highs in the middle of December, it's hard to believe we'll ever see freezing temperatures this winter. But it's bound to get cold one of these days, and for many that means paying more money to energy companies for winter heating bills.

You can cut your energy consumption and save a little cash by checking your home for places frosty air can seep in from outdoors. Light a stick of incense and carry it around the house. Check for leaks by holding it up to window frames, door sills, electrical boxes, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, ceiling fixtures, attic hatches and any other place air might come in. Watch the drifting smoke to find the leaks, which are easy to spot on a windy day. Then use a caulking gun to seal the gaps.
