Hopscotch Kickoff Party: DJ Paypal, DJ Earl, DJ Big Hank

When: Wed., Sept. 3, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $5
This unofficial Hopscotch launch derives its power from a triptych of maximalist electronic weirdos. There's North Carolina mystery man and Internet wormhole deep diver DJ Paypal; check out his "The Ride," which turns an old Drake track into a stoned, six-minute series of bleeps and bloops. Chicago's DJ Earl, meanwhile, takes the Windy City's underground chic-turned-hipster-cool sound and turns it toward the psychedelic and smooth. His "Third Eye 14" makes a Roy Ayers sample sound more blissfully trippy. In the first slot, Chicago-via-Raleigh's Big Hank mixes hammering percussion and super-fast vocal samples. At one point, his recent 5thCity Anthems EP grinds together Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. However strange it gets, this electro showcase never loses sight of the party. It even makes the case that footwork is dance music's true bleeding-edge subgenre. —Brandon Soderberg
