Just can't wait for Shakori Hills' biannual Grassroots Festival to return next month? The fifth edition of the Hoppin' John Fiddlers' Convention is a perfect excuse to escape to Shakori's bucolic confines. The three-night hootenanny includes plenty of dancing (cloggers and nightly square dances), food (a Hoppin' John cook-off and a cakewalk), and music (jammy newgrass pickers Big Fat Gap and a showcase from banjo player Marvin Gaster, who plays in the two-finger style that was once popular in North Carolina's Piedmont). Admission is $6–$12 daily or $22 for a weekend pass, with an additional charge for camping Friday and Saturday nights. —Spencer Griffith
