Keeping a positive outlook by whistling a happy tune has been a popular notion ever since Anna sang its praises in The King and I. UNC's famed PlayMakers PRC2 series kicks off with Samuel Beckett's Happy Days, presumably to spark a dialogue on maintaining hope when the chips are down. Winnie, the show's main character, gets buried up to her chest and persists in thinking happy, optimistic thoughts about how the day will progress. Julie Fishell plays Winnie, and her longtime PlayMakers cohort Ray Dooley acts as her neglectful husband, Willie. Performances run this weekend only, through Sept. 12, with shows nightly at 7:30 and a 2 p.m. matinee on the last day. Each performance features a discussion afterward. Tickets are $10–$35, with Sunday's performance costing $10 as part of the Community Nights Series. —Sarah Ewald
