Stefan Fatsis is perhaps best known as the author of Word Freak, which tells of his adventures in the world of high-level competitive Scrabble. He's primarily a sportswriter, though; when he wrote the book, he was covering sports for The Wall Street Journal, and he's currently a web columnist for Sports Illustrated. He's also one of the three hosts of Slate magazine's lively sports podcast Hang Up and Listen. Started in 2009 and featuring Fatsis, Josh Levin and NPR's Mike Pesca, Hang Up is more literate and clever than the typical sports call-in show. A recent episode found Pesca indulging his own word freak tendencies, when Levin asked him about a subject he had just "alluded to": "I believe I referred to it directly," said Pesca, laughing. "That's my sports radio pet peeve of the day."
Tonight the hosts will stage their first-ever live show at NC State's McKimmon Center. Guests will include UNC-Chapel Hill women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance and former NC State basketball player and ACC Player of the Year Julius Hodge. Tickets to the 6 p.m. event are free, but advance registration is required at www.slate.com/ncstate. —Marc Maximov
