Description:

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

As a single father to two teenagers, Ricky’s kids are his inspiration. “I want to leave something behind for them when I am gone,” he says, “something my parents weren’t able to do.”

Growing up, Ricky readily admits that he made serious mistakes and paid for them. Seventeen years ago, Ricky walked out of prison determined to make amends. Since then, he has worked to build a life that would make his parents proud.

Ricky has worked as a landscape technician for the State for 11 years. He sometimes supervises inmates on landscape detail. “I tell every one of them,” he says, “if I can turn my life around, so can you.”

Ricky’s work and credit history were great, but his income disqualified him from conventional loans. Habitat offers an affordable, no-interest mortgage in exchange for giving at least 250 ‘sweat equity’ hours, attending homeownership and budgeting classes, and making a modest down payment.

A fast learner with a knack for training others, Ricky quickly exceeded his required hours and helped to build other homes. “It was about the good feeling I got from helping somebody else to the best of my ability,” says Ricky. “When my house was complete, I drove my kids into the driveway and said, ‘Look at this house I helped build, it belongs to us.’”
