Greg Trooper has been releasing albums for a quarter-century to intermittent acclaim. Perhaps folk-blues would be the best description of what he does, though country twang, gospel, rock and R&B have all figured in at times. He's mined a rootsy expanse with a warm, reedy baritone somewhere between Mark Knopfler and Robbie Robertson. Whether cracking sardonic ("Another Shitty Saturday Night") or penning poignant portraiture ("Muhammad Ali (The Meaning of Christmas)"), he's a canny songwriter, having been covered by such gifted lyricists as Steve Earle, Billy Bragg and Tom Russell. His latest, Upside-Down Town, blends organ-laden soul-blues and strummy folk on a dozen smart tracks. —Chris Parker
