Often during a film, I find myself thinking of how it could be translated into a stage musical. I didn't find myself thinking that with the 1990 Patrick Swayze weepie Ghost, but apparently the film's original screenwriter, Bruce Joel Rubin, did. The resulting show, with elaborate video background effects to re-create New York City and walking through walls and stuff, received mixed reviews and ran 136 performances on Broadway, but will this new touring version prove more successful? We're not sure, though checking the song list does indicate that, yes, there will be several renditions of "Unchained Melody." Trivia: Tony Goldwyn, who played Carl in the original film, is now known as the adulterous president on TV's Scandal, which had an episode title based on Whoopi Goldberg's character's dialogue from the film: "Molly, you in danger, girl." Sadly, there is no corresponding number for this in the musical. Perhaps the touring version will rectify that. The production runs through Nov.17.
