Music worth leaving the house to hear this week

Redheaded Stepchild
The Cave
Friday, Jan. 9, 10 p.m.

Songwriters Kathryn Koch and David Nanni started this "rhythm and bluegrass" outfit seven years ago as an acoustic escape. With a funky lineup that includes banjo, dobro and accordion, the vocal strengths of the band have a solid backbone and an even more solid backbeat. The Buffalo-based band has been roaming the road a lot over the past few years. Those that have seen their previous visits south say it's a show not to miss. Down home hot stove music for the chilly weekend ahead.

The Standard
Go! Studios
Saturday Jan. 10, 10:00 p.m.

New immigrants to the Triangle from Portland, Oregon, The Standard is a quintet known for their diverse live shows, varying from murky melancholy rock to fast-paced anthems. Their sound has won them opening slots for groups like Wire and Clinic thus far, and their new record is to be released by Yep Roc in March. Come check out a new edition to the fold. --Chris Toenes

Sharkquest, Cutter
Go! Studios
Wednesday, Jan 14, 10 p.m.

A benefit to help filmmakers Brett Ingram and Jim Haverkamp make their way out to Utah and the Slamdance Film Festival. Monster Road, their film about animator Bruce Bickford with a soundtrack written and performed by Sharkquest, is in the festival this year.
