If you're doing research on local rock and pop around the Triangle (get out your tricorders, Trekkies), you're not likely to find a better representative sampling than these three bands, all packed into one evening helping out Go! Studios. Jett Rink recently enlisted a new guitar player, Ben Felton, after having dropped one of their absolute best cuts on the recent local collection Compulation. What about seeing 'em live? Viva Viva! Currently residing in the "what's next?" category, The Comas have their a full length in the can, and should be showing off their new stuff. Durham's The Sames are really in the pocket if you dig your pop on the guitar-blowout side. Best Saturday chock-full of local rockers in quite a while. Doyle Lawson's traditional bluegrass gospel harkens back to the days of Bill Monroe and the Louvin Brothers; rich vocal harmonies woven into mandolin, fiddle and banjo flourishes. Lawson started with the Kentucky Mountain Boys in the Sixties, and the Country Gentlemen in the Seventies, mentoring many younger players along the way, including Ricky Skaggs. When so many of his contemporaries' live appearances continue to dwindle, here's a chance to catch one of the originals of Southern gospel and bluegrass on the road. After a month-long residency at Go! Studios in Carrboro, Richmond, Va.'s Carbon Leaf return to the Triangle for an acoustic show. The band has a new album underway with producers John Morland and David Lowrey and is riding high on the choice of one of its songs for a Pontiac Vibe commercial. Meanflower, also from Richmond, opens.
