Music worth leaving the house to hear this week

Lucinda Williams with The Jayhawks
Disco Rodeo
Thursday, Sept. 25, 8 p.m.
$25 advance, $28 day of show

Throughout her career, she's had attempts at overdub-heavy records and glossy Nashville-establishment production, but with Lucinda, it always comes down to the words. Her lyrics stand up on their own-- so much that if presented with them in book form, you'd actually find it good reading, not unlike the poetry of her father, Miller Williams. Arguably one of the best songwriters going right now, Lucinda's brought her latest, World Without Tears, back to a bare lyrical landscape, recorded live. Come see how they play with some of her staples like "Drunken Angel." Alt-country mainstays The Jayhawks open. For more information, call 836-8535. ---Chris Toenes

Quasi with Hella and Pleasant
Kings Barcade
Friday Sept. 26, 9 p.m.

Quasi, or Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, make quite a fine racket: all melodic pop hooks, with possessed garage-sale organ and guitar, framed in Weiss' dead-on rhythms. They're appropriately matched with Hella, a Sacramento-based instrumental duo. Hella resides on the noisy end of the spectrum, using dynamics and splintering guitar and drums to great effect. Chapel Hill pop-rockers Pleasant kick off things. Call 831-1005 for more information. --Chris Toenes
