The sometimes unfortunate propensity for metal bands to embrace split-personality, sing-scream dynamics doesn't make it any less rare to successfully balance the guttural and the graceful. This regional bill gives it a good shot, though. Virginia's Saint Diablo invites melody by way of Latin rhythm and funk-metal riffs that suggest, at turns, late Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura and Static-X. Mooresville ensemble Annabel Leigh takes cues from Euro-metallers Opeth and In Flames, and radio hitmakers such as Deftones or Incubus. Thirst For Clarity and Steryle fill the metalcore quota, while Foes of the Fallen break the pattern, opting to leave melody to the lead guitarist. —Bryan C. Reed
