Durham Art Guild—The 53rd annual juried art expo of the Durham Art Guild has its formal opening reception tonight. This year's visiting juror is Barkley Hendricks, who recently lectured at the Nasher Museum and who will return there in February for a major retrospective of his work (see above), called Birth of the Cool. The reception begins at 5 p.m. and the show runs through Nov. 28. For more info and gallery hours, visit www.durhamartguild.org. —Karlie Justus

Correction (Oct. 25, 2007): The Durham Art Guild Juried Art Show is located at Durham Art Guild, 120 Morris St., not at the Nasher Museum.

Raleigh
Double Negative, Goner
Slim's—"WTF do Goner and Double Negative have in common?" goes the question for this unorthodox double bill of cannonballs in way close quarters. Loose ties with local label Bifocal Media aside, the cityscape narratives and big hooks of piano-powered poppers Goner share two things with the atonal fury of hardcore monsters Double Negative: Energy and high-hurdle status as two of the best bands in the state. The cover is $3 for the 10 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin

Cary
Artists for Animals
Cary Gallery of Artists—Local artists team up to benefit animals. All proceeds go to Second Chance Pet Adoptions and Independent Animal Rescue. The event begins at 6 p.m. For more info, visit www.secondchancenc.org or call 462-2035. —Ashley Roberts
