Friday, November 23

Chapel Hill (and Beyond)
BUY NOTHING DAY
INTERNATIONALIST BOOKS—Got an urge to splurge? Don't do it! You might know it's "Black Friday"—a strange and rather sinister name for a shopping binge, when you think about it—but were you aware that is also Buy Nothing Day? That's what Internationalist Books tells us, a day to defiantly keep your money out of the greasy hands of corporate American and attend to your own spiritual well-being. Even if you try to give your money to Internationalist Books they (probably) won't take it. They'll be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. but their bookshelves will be covered and space will be cleared for artist-led workshops. An open potluck begins at noon, and the store will host a clothing trade on its front porch. At 4 p.m., they will dedicate their new lending library to Lisa Garmon, a beloved community activist who died last summer. Buy nothing, continue giving thanks. —Ashley Roberts

Carrboro
FASHION SHOW 2007
CAT'S CRADLE—Skip on Black Friday at the mall and get your fix of fashion at the Cradle. A runway show and large-scale art installations will feature designs by The Merch, Sladesign, Mini Cassette, Sarah Mclane Clothing and more. It starts at 9 p.m. and although admission is free, donations will be collected for the Greenspace Fund of Carrboro, a group dedicated to local sustainable living. For more info, check out www.catscradle.com. —Karlie Justus
