A night at the Wake County Speedway; First Friday

Wake County Speedway - PHOTO BY DEREK ANDERSON

WAKE COUNTY SPEEDWAY—Charlie Stephenson took the checkered flag in the super-late-model class during last week's season-opening weekend at Wake County Speedway. That's a simple enough fact, at least until you consider that Stephenson suffered a heart attack only two weeks ago. Honestly, I'm not sure if that would have limited my enjoyment of fried funnel cake and bologna sandwiches in the metal bleachers or inspired a taste for even more indulgences. Either way, it epitomizes the exuberant pro-am platform that survives in a perfect night of small-town auto racing. Three divisions run tonight, with gates opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 for grandstand and $25 for pit access. See for details. —Grayson Currin

VARIOUS VENUES—It's written that the first shall be last and the last shall be first, but you'll want to be first in Raleigh for First Friday. At 7 p.m., the Museum of Natural Sciences will show the horror film The Raven. Points of View Gallery has new work by Leah Sobsey, with a reception from 6-9 p.m., while at 7 p.m. DesignBox hosts "Low Pop," a show of cartoonists. Artspace will host receptions and gallery walks in Gallery 1, Upfront Gallery and the Lobby, starting at 6 p.m. Also starting at 6 p.m. (but running until 10 p.m.!) is a reception for new work by Scott Upton and Nicole Welch. And don't forget to visit the Bickett Gallery at Five Points before it closes on May 20. —Iesha Brown
