You can call the music of Freedy Johnston folk-rock, at least until the tag "gently rocking Americana" gains traction. At the core of his best songs you'll find a melody that looks you in the eye and dares you not to hum or "la la" along and a backbeat too polite to wallop you upside the head but not above striking the nerve that controls toe-tapping. Whether they paint pictures of a town called Hopeless or women named Evie and Venus, the words are worth savoring, too. Those elements are all on display with Rain on the City, 2010's most welcome release. —Rick Cornell
