Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show, Bill Poss, Tif Ginn

When: Sun., Jan. 20, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $17-20

Born a contrarian, Fred Eaglesmith lit out for the road as a teenager, guitar in tow. In three-plus decades, the Ontario native has traversed the entire expanse of Americana, one step ahead of clear-cutting mediocrity. So when beardos and banjo-sporting hipsters descended like locusts, Eaglesmith headed for higher ground, exploring gospel-blues, bossa nova and Sun Records. The last of those is the baseline for his latest, 6 Volts, which was recorded in mono, musicians gathered around a single microphone. It's a raw, biting album highlighted by "Johnny Cash," an ode to the Man in Black that calls out the Johnny-come-latelys. —Chris Parker
