Freak Dance

When: Mon., May 14 2012

While the sketch/ improv comedy group known as the Upright Citizens Brigade (aka the crew co-founded by the too-damn-wonderful Amy Poehler, star of Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation) has become a driving force in contemporary alternative comedy, they haven't managed to successfully make that leap over to the big screen. Their first effort, 2002's Martin and Orloff, couldn't find a distributor and ended up going straight to DVD. For their latest film, the oddball musical comedy Freak Dance, they're omitting the distribution drama altogether and sending the film out on a cross-country tour, hitting arthouse theaters and revival houses. The plot involves a spoiled rich girl/ wannabe dancer caught between two rival dance groups; it looks like we have another takeoff on dance-battle movies (perhaps a cross between Breakin' and You Got Served). —Craig D.
