CRAZY HEART—This story of a alcoholic country singer who turns his life around with the help of a young woman and her son recalls Tender Mercies, which gave Robert Duvall his only Academy Award. Playing middle-aged boozy crooner "Bad" Blake, Jeff Bridges is likely to turn this film—in which Duvall co-stars—into his own Oscar vehicle. Besides its derivative storyline, co-screenwriter Scott Cooper's directorial debut suffers from a lack of chemistry between Bad and the much younger Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal, also Oscar-nominated for her performance). And, conflict resolution comes easy, like speed bumps along the route to a rather anticlimactic finish line. Still, even when Bad is at his baddest, he never fully loses his lovable Lebowski-esque charm. While Crazy Heart is the cinematic equivalent of a country-standard cover band, Bridges' terrific solo act is the showstopper. Rated R. Read our review. —NM
DEAR JOHN—While visiting his father's beach house in Charleston, S.C. while on leave from duty as an Army Ranger, John Tyree (Tatum) meets and falls for Savannah (Amanda Seyfried), a doe-eyed college student. The casting of the hunky hulk Tatuam is troublesome on its face. The choice becomes downright dire once Tatum is called upon to tiptoe his way through the story's dense emotional minefield. Dear John goes AWOL as a love story for various reasons, including director Lasse Hallström's ponderous direction, which distills John and Savannah's coupling down to frolicking in the surf, making out in the rain and monotonous voiceovers of their overseas letters to each other. But, its saving grace is the complicated relationship between John and his father, played with great skill by Richard Jenkins. Rated PG-13. Read our review. —NM
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL—Picking up somewhere close to where the original left off, this sequel squanders any adult appeal as it panders exclusively to the kindergarten set with fart jokes and a soundtrack of auto-tuned songs. Rated PG. —KJ
AVATAR—The hardest thing to stomach about Avatar is James Cameron's delusion that—with a few possible exceptions—there is nothing to laugh about in this schmaltzy, wanna-be epic about an ex-marine who falls in love with a giant blue cartoon. Self-serious and chock full of New Age hokum, Avatar is trippier in the scenes that take place on the military base, where 3-D effects give the film an eerie ground-shifting feel, than it is in its fantasyland of the planet Pandora, where giant blue humanoids prance around in faux-hippie jewelry and make feline hissing sounds when they're angry. Many Oscar nominations for this one. Rated PG-13. —NG
THE BLIND SIDE—Another sanctimonious tale masquerading as story of hope and inspiration. Sandra Bullock is the matriarch of a well-heeled Memphis family that becomes guardians to a homeless teenage man-child, Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), in hopes of improving his life, grades and, oh by the way, his chances at a college scholarship. Oscar nomination for Bullock. Rated PG-13. —NM

BROKEN EMBRACES—Pedro Almodóvar tells the story of a film director named Mateo Blanco, who is directing a film starring Lena (Penélope Cruz), a first-time actress who has trapped herself in a relationship with the financier who bankrolled Mateo's film. As Almodóvar nails every camera move, every plot turn, and every set decoration, the master director proves that—at least when he is in his instantly recognizable world of bold imagery conveying humanity's extreme fragility—he can do anything. Rated R. —NG
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES—Based on the nonfiction book The Cure by Geeta Anand, this film tells the story of John Crowley (Brendan Fraser), a high-powered executive who has two children who have inherited a rare disorder called Pompe disease. The telegenic children tug gently at the heartstrings, and the story is uplifting enough, one supposes, but it would be more at home on Lifetime's Sunday afternoon movie lineup. With Harrison Ford and Jared Harris. Rated PG. —SE
THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS—Despite the big names in the cast, the real protagonist here is director Terry Gilliam, the mad cinematic wizard who has described his latest shambolic fantasy trip as "autobiographical." Gilliam's visual flourishes remain as dizzying and hypnotic as ever, but they obscure the same lack of narrative underpinning that has crippled many of his lesser concoctions. While this film is a polished clunker, Heath Ledger manages to wring out one last dynamic performance. Rated PG-13. —NM

IT'S COMPLICATED—Do you have the strength to discover another person when someone in whom you have invested a score of years, like an ex-husband, reappears? In any event, the laughs keep coming in this Nancy Meyers comedy, and there is a great comic set piece as the film's central trio (Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin) rediscovers the joys of smoking weed. Rated PG-13. —LB.
LEAP YEAR—The gorgeous Irish backdrops and the cheeky interplay between Amy Adams and Matthew Goode will no doubt engage most viewers, but the hackneyed plot of this rom-com is far less impressive. Rated PG. —BD
THE LOVELY BONES—Peter Jackson's adaptation of Alice Sebold's mega-bestseller seems caught in his own in-between world, taking Sebold's cumbersome plot points and lacquering them with jolting narrative and tonal shifts. The story's meditative core metastasizes into a psychological thriller, police procedural, revenge saga, love story, coming-of-age tale, dark comedy and, yes, spiritual odyssey. The result is schizophrenic and strangely emotionless, with intermittent moments of brilliance suffocated under the weight of great expectations and muddled implementation. Stanley Tucci picked up an Oscar nomination for his chilling role here. Rated PG-13. —NM

THE MESSENGER—Two soldiers (Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson) are assigned to the Army's casualty notification service, which is responsible for informing families of the deaths of their loved ones. These "messengers" must repeatedly revisit their own wounds and demons as they experiencing the raw grief of others. But, beyond the affecting subject matter, the strength of the film is its ensemble cast, which also includes Samantha Morton. But, this film truly belongs to Foster, who offers the sort of stellar, transcendent performance that defines and catapults careers. Rated R. —NM

SHERLOCK HOLMES—While Guy Ritchie's frenzied filmmaking style is strictly mod, his Holmes—portrayed ably and energetically by Robert Downey Jr.—is informed by Arthur Conan Doyle's intellectually complex, personally flawed literary incarnation. You can almost smell the muck in Ritchie's rendering of 19th-century London, although his editing and pacing are choppy in the best of times. And, when Holmes begins deciphering spells and maps to predict where the villain will strike next, the script takes an turn toward a Victorian-era version of The Da Vinci Code. Rated PG-13. —NM

A SINGLE MAN—Based on the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood, Tom Ford's directing debut is set in 1962 and depicts one day in the life of George Falconer (Colin Firth), a 50ish, gay English college professor living in a Los Angeles glass-and-timber home, eight months after the sudden death of his longtime partner. A Single Man contains moments of filmmaking at its most exquisite, with camerawork, costumes, set designs and a brooding soundtrack so sumptuous and evocative that they essentially become their own characters. Still, the film's pace suffers from a surfeit of slow-motion montage; what rescues the film are the headline performances by the Oscar-nominated Firth and Julianne Moore. Rated R. —NM
THE SPY NEXT DOOR—Age has not been kind to action star Jackie Chan. His latest, a schmaltzy ode to multicultural families, finds the fading star playing Bob, a boring pen salesman who moonlights as a spy. The result is a lackluster sequence of played-out sitcom gags with Chan and other washed-out stars (George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus) mugging for the camera. Rated PG. --KJ

UP IN THE AIR—George Clooney stars as Ryan Bingham, a smooth-talking veteran "career transition counselor," a euphemism for being a hired gun paid to handle employee layoffs by corporate bosses too cowardly to do it themselves. Clooney's retro leading-man charisma is perfect for this material, while the talented Anna Kendrick, playing his intense sidekick, would feel right at home in a screwball comedy. Vera Farmiga, as Ryan's love interest and fellow traveler of the friendly skies, radiates the sophistication of classic noir divas. Clooney, Farmiga and Kendrick all received well-deserved Oscar nominations. Rated R. —NM
THE YOUNG VICTORIA— A period piece about the turbulent early years of Queen Victoria's reign must have seemed like a plum role for Emily Blunt, the brunette beauty who has flashed talent and cross-genre versatility in such films as My Summer of Love and The Devil Wears Prada. Unfortunately, Blunt's vitality dissipates in The Young Victoria, a derivative, somnolent biopic directed by Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y.). Rated PG. —NMDue to the possibility of last-minute scheduling changes, we recommend calling ahead to theaters to confirm showtimes.
