Opening This Week

COCO BEFORE CHANEL—Chanel was a fashion revolutionary. Her designs emphasized not the feminine adornments that men want to see, but the women who wore the clothes. Inspired by menswear, nun habits and sailor jerseys, she simplified and democratized 20th-century styles, proving that comfort and chic could coexist. The woman who did that must have been a force of nature, but one would never know from Audrey Tatou's prim, restrained performance. The film takes place around 1910, with Chanel alienated from her stratified society and the froufrou fashions of the day. Surely, Chanel, not as pretty as Tatou, must have had a dazzling personality to entice all those men, especially the two in particular who shared what the real Chanel called "my hot little body" when the film takes place, more or less around 1910. If only Tatou could have summoned a little more fire, she could have melted the glacial pace of this ambitious biopic. Coco Before Chanel presents an intriguing subject in need of a bit of crisp styling. Rated PG-13. Read our review. —LB

Current Releases

AMELIA—This lushly photographed hagiography of Amelia Earhart—ably portrayed by Hilary Swank—feels like a nostalgic keepsake, dipped in amber and mounted for display. Director Mira Nair uses the tried-and-tired narrative flashback to oscillate between scenes along Earhart's doomed 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe and a by-the-numbers overview of her ascent to success and worldwide celebrity. Along the way, the narrow screenplay also tracks her marriage to publisher George P. Putnam (Richard Gere, playing Richard Gere) and (purported) dalliance with aviation pioneer Gene Vidal (a clumsily used Ewan McGregor). Flashing Earhart's toothy grin, Midwestern lilt, and lanky, androgynous frame, Swank again reminds us that her dual Oscars are no fluke. Too often, however, she is given little to say beyond greeting card treacle and mildly progressive platitudes. The safe and conventional result, unfortunately, is nothing like the daring, transformative woman at its center. Amelia should have soared. Instead, it simply cruises along on autopilot. ASTRO BOY—Directed by Aardman Animations vet David Bowers, this origin story takes place in the futuristic Metro City, a floating metropolis carved from an earthen surface it now uses as a giant landfill. When one of Metro's leading scientists (voiced by Nicholas Cage) loses his son, Toby (Freddy Highmore), during a laboratory accident, he implants Toby's neural makeup into a robotic doppelganger equipped with extraordinary powers. Astro Boy finds refuge with defrocked human surface dwellers, with whom he learns lessons about prejudice, heroism and the essence of humanity. Rated PG. —NM

ALL THE BEST—Diwali celebrations bring this ensemble romp featuring Fardeen Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Ajay Devgan. The scrambling liars covering up their misdeeds are directed by the perpetrator of Golmaal and Golmaal Returns. —LB

THE BOYS ARE BACK—The Boys are Back is an emotionally herky-jerky tearjerker about the travails of Joe Warr (Clive Owen), a father raising two boys and trying to maintain a career after losing his wife to cancer. Judging from the sniffles in the theater that began at 10 minutes in and didn't stop until the closing credits, this film excels at its questionable intent. Rated PG-13. —NG

BRIGHT STAR—Jane Campion's latest is the story of the love affair between poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and the sexy flirt Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). The pace of Bright Star ambles along, luxuriating in John's malaise and poking around the corners of the rambling house that he and Abby occupy. One of the year's best. Rated PG. —NG

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY—Whether this latest entry in Michael Moore's canon of dogmatic documentaries will appeal to you or not hinges, as always, on your political bent. Capitalism is a broadside attack against the haves in the name of the have-nots. On the other hand, Moore's oeuvre of manipulative editing, juvenile japery and cheap theatrics has rarely felt more tiresome. Rated R. —NM

COUPLES RETREAT—The kid with coke-bottle glasses from A Christmas Story, aka "Ralphie" (Peter Billingsley) directs this tedious comedy about four couples who visit destination island "Eden" for a little harmonious marriage healing. Perhaps the film's biggest fault is general comedic lameness, the pigeonholing of African American actors into shallow stereotypes and banking on shark attacks and a dry-humping yoga instructor for laughs. —KJ

DISTRICT 9—South African director Neil Blomkamp's film provides a glimpse of the chaos and racism that ensues in Johannesburg when aliens, marooned on Earth for more than 20 years, attempt to integrate into human society. Rated R. —NM

FAME—The last time Fame hit screens—1980—America valued modesty. A peppy tale trailing a bunch of gifted kids at New York City's performing arts high school had pizzazz. Today, every kid thinks s/he's special and the culture reeks with everyone's sweaty desire for fame. The only time the screen jolts awake are moments when director Kevin Tancharoen actually lets somebody perform. Rated PG. —LB

GOOD HAIR—Acting as this documentary's master of ceremonies, gadabout and truth seeker, Chris Rock examines historical and cultural aspects of African-American—principally female—hair, the central focus being the decided tendency to equate "good" or beauty with European or Asian hairstyles. Good Hair is a compelling conversation starter that manages to be both good-natured and informative. Rated PG-13 — NM

HUMPDAY—Lynn Shelton's sly, marvelous comedy is one of the year's best films, beginning with a premise that followers of American indies may recognize: A 30-something man, happily married and settling down in the Pacific Northwest, receives a surprise visit from a hirsute blond college friend. A night of drink and drugs leads to a proposition from which neither can back down. This is one of the year's best films, and Shelton creates compelling, believable characters with natural speech patterns that mask a tightly constructed narrative. Rated R. —DF

THE INVENTION OF LYING—Ricky Gervais has made a successful career by making us uncomfortable, but his latest, which he co-wrote and directed with Matthew Robinson, doesn't measure up to his earlier work. Gervais) plays an unsuccessful screenwriter and hapless loser in a world where everyone is excessively and annoyingly truthful. Rated PG-13. —BD

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY—Director-writer Oren Peli's focus on the slow-burning tension and fear between the couple and their paranormally charged environment is momentarily entrancing but the amateur affect of the leads and a tired bag of fright tricks ultimately undermine this film's Blair Witch aspirations. Rated R. —KJ

SURROGATES—In Surrogates, technological advances in the not-too-distant future have led to a world where humans live in physical isolation, interacting with the outside world via humanoid replicas they control remotely via "stim chairs." Rated PG-13. —NM

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE—Director Spike Jonze expands Maurice Sendak's acclaimed 48-page, 10-sentence children's book with the same visual and narrative daring he brought to Being John Malkovich. After an unhappy young boy, Max (Max Records), throws a violent temper tantrum one night for the benefit of his divorced, equally melancholy mom (Catherine Keener), he dons a wolf costume and retreats to an imaginary island inhabited by large talking beasts. Wth its emphasis of mood, the film ends up being more a portrait of sadness and disillusionment than a story about fully realized characters racked with those same emotions. Rated PG. —NM

ZOMBIELAND—This take-the-zombies-to-the-amusement-park romp isn't as funny or scary as Shaun of the Dead but, at an efficient 88 minutes, it's an amusing diversion boasting some nifty art direction, makeup and performances. Rated R. —NM
