Opening This Week

FOOD, INC—Thanks to a confluence of greed, ruthless efficiency, indifferent regulators and complaisant courts, a small group of huge corporations has taken control of the food chain. Robert Kenner's earnest doc is largely a synthesis of two of this generation's most important popular books about food production and consumption: Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation and Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma. Some of the material feels pro forma or heavily masaged to make a rhetorical point, but Food, Inc.'s message is undeniably urgent. Still, one wishes for a few contrary view that would provide fresh grist for viewers who are likely already sympathetic with this film's agenda. Rated PG. Read our review.DF

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE—The recurring promise of "the darkest Harry Potter film yet" is finally realized the funniest, most visually sublime and, yes, darkest addition yet to the popular book-to-film series. More than any other, this Potter grasps the fact that the series' true magic rests not in passageways, potions and periphrastic spells, but in the relationships between the characters, particularly seminal trio of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), now steeped squarely in the hormonal whims of adolescent angst. But the film's real star is returning director David Yates, whose pitch-perfect craftsmanship not only distinguishes Half-Blood Prince from its forerunners, but also serves to validate the series as a whole. Current Releases

AWAY WE GO—Sam Mendes, still best known for the vastly overrated American Beauty, is no stranger to smug, reductive cartoons of the American way of life. In this road movie, scripted by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, a young couple—Burt (John Krasinski) and his pregnant wife Verona (Maya Rudolph)—hit the road to find the perfect place to have their baby. Along the way, they visit friends and family who illustrate grotesque varieties of the American experience. The enterprise reeks of entitlement, where people don't realize how lucky they are not to have to work very hard for a living while they decide which "birthing experience" they want to have in which cool town. On the bright side, Maggie Gyllenhaal is a scream as a P.C. professor with an aversion to baby strollers. Rated R. —DF

BRÜNO—In Brüno, director Larry Charles and writer-star Sasha Baron Cohen set out to lampoon celebrity and, primarily, homophobia. But in most scenes, we aren't laughing at intolerance, we're laughing at Brüno. It's as if Cohen is baiting his audience by showing how much his rubes are homophobic to distract from how much he's making fun of his gay character. I don't think that Baron Cohen is intentionally doing gay minstrelsy. I think he wants to be a provocateur, but he doesn't how or who to provoke, and he uses caricature to get broad laughs because he has no real insights. While I assume that Cohen and Charles mean this film to be a challenge to (or at least a goof on) American stupidity and homophobia, it's more a product of those things than an affront to them. Rated R. —NG

CHÉRI—In art as in life, a woman of a certain age, even a very beautiful one, begins to fade into invisibility. In Chérie, Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen) and his Dangerous Liaisons scenarist, playwright Christopher Hampton, adapt a 1920 Colette novel of the same title. Léa (the lovely 51-year-old Michelle Pfeiffer) is a grande horizontale, or courtesan, who allows herself a sunset dalliance, the glow of which melts unexpectedly into a deep amour. The delectable art nouveau costumes and production design add immeasurably to the film's pleasures. Chéri is about decadent passions, but also life's fragility—it's never too late to be blindsided by love. Rated R. —LB

THE HANGOVER—Todd Phillips's Frat Pack comedies (Road Trip, Old School), have always suffered from a certain narrative patchiness, but the tight script for this tale of the aftermath of a raucous bachelor party might be his strongest film yet. Rated R. —ZS

I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER—Ahh, high school movies. You've long since graduated, but you'll watch them anyway, recognizing yourself in the characters of American Pie, of Clueless, of Ten Things I Hate About You. And perhaps this one: Valedictorian Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust) gives a graduation speech about living with no regrets, which logically leads him to declare his hidden love for class hottie Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere). Underneath the hijinks and accurately tuned dialogue is a very sweet undertone as the characters try to navigate their relationships. This ground has been covered many times, no question, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun. Rated PG-13. —SE

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS—A prehistoric heroic trio, consisting of mammoths Manny (voiced by Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah), and saber-toothed tiger Diego (Denis Leary), embarks on a journey to save their sloth friend Sid (John Leguizamo) after an angry mama T-Rex captures him. Dawn of the Dinosaurs lacks the magic of the first Ice Age, but its story is more compelling than the inane but well-intentioned second installment, The Meltdown. Rated PG. —BD

KAMBAKKHT ISHQ (Damn Love)—A sexist Hollywood stuntman (Akshay Kumar) woos a fiery supermodel/surgeon (Kareena Kapoor). Set in LA, and sporting awkward cameos by Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards, this glitzy action comedy romance begs for a fast-forward button to skip past the pointlessly vulgar and politically incorrect. It's silly—and pretty misogynistic at times: When the hero call the heroine a bitch, well, "That's a deal breaker, ladies," as Tina Fey would say on 30 Rock. Yet, the songs are lively, and KI is occasionally laugh out loud funny. Not rated. —LB

MOON—With only a single live actor on the spaceship set for the entirety of the film, Moon is a laudable attempt at a return to the low-tech sci-fi films that we used to have. Duncan Jones's film is a pastiche of the classics, especially 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running, with a few mystery-of-consciousness lifts from Blade Runner and The Matrix. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is the sole human engineer stationed at a moon base operated by an Earth-based mining company. The story turns into somewhat of a space thriller when Sam discovers that he may or may not be a clone. . Rated R. —DF

MY SISTER'S KEEPER—Tickets for this four-hanky tearjerker should come with a week's worth of anti-depressants— let's just say I haven't seen this many grown men cry in a movie theater since the death of Spock. An 11-year-old girl, Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin), medically engineered in vitro as a donor-child by parents who periodically harvest her genetically-matched bodily fluids and organs for the benefit of her terminal leukemia-stricken sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), sues Mom (Cameron Diaz) and Dad (Jason Patric) for medical emancipation. Rated PG-13. —NM

NEW YORK—Three carefree college friends (John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh), find their lives irrevocably changed by 9/11. Sam (Abraham) is falsely accused of terrorism and remanded to Guantánamo Bay. There is an extremely intense sequence of Sam's torture, with methods familiar from news reports, and well, who remembers anything after that? Director Kabir Khan (Kabul Express) was a war correspondent in Afghanistan; his film is ambitious but he has too much to say for just one movie. Not rated. —LB

THE PROPOSAL—Folksy Sitka, Alaska, warms up frosty Sandra Bullock, who plays tyrannical Margaret, a Canadian-born book editor about to be deported to the land of universal health care and blackmails her assistant, Drew (Ryan Reynolds), into marrying her for a green card. The couple returns home for his grandmother's 90th birthday. Rated PG-13. —LB

PUBLIC ENEMIES—Following the formula of Heat, his superb 1995 crime drama, Michael Mann juxtaposes lawmen with their lawless quarry, separating them by the thinnest of moral dividing lines—indeed, the film's title eventually assumes an ambiguous air. Here, Christian Bale plays Melvin Purvis, the G-man assigned by FBI head J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) with the task of tracking and apprehending or killing John Dillinger and his cohorts. Dillinger (Johnny Depp) is cast as a violent, cunning criminal, but also a PR-conscious celebrity keenly aware of his populist appeal among the Depression-era public. Less a biopic than a glossy, stylish elegy, this film ultimately is more a tribute to Mann's own craftsmanship than it is to the doomed Dillinger—or the men who captured him. Rated R. —NM

TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN—To quote Team America: World Police, "Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?" Unsurprisingly, Transformers 2 is just as bombastic as the first film. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and main squeeze Mikaela (Megan Fox) again find themselve in the middle of a war for universal supremacy between the Transformers. There are Mario video games that have more depth—indeed, sitting through Transformers is like watching a 150-minute-long arcade game. Rated PG-13. —NM

WHATEVER WORKS—In Woody Allen's latest, Larry David plays Boris Yellnikoff, a physics genius turned chess instructor who takes in a ditsy Southern belle played by Evan Rachel Wood. David and Allen create a thoughtfully developed protagonist in Boris, one of the most fascinating characters in any of Allen's movies. Like most of Allen's later comedies this movie suffers from dialogue arrhythmia, a miscast leading lady, and a lazy repetition of ideas. But also like his later, funny films it is packed with moments of brilliance, bizarre hilarity, and a formal and aesthetic maturity. Rated PG-13. —NG
