Opening This Week

12—One might not have known the world needed this overwrought Russian remake of 12 Angry Men, which was memorably filmed in 1957 by Sidney Lumet, with such stalwarts of that era's righteous dramas as Lee J. Cobb, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden and Henry Fonda. Nikita Mikhalkov's 159-minute update is set in the disillusioned aftermath of Russia's war against Chechnya. Although the whodunnit aspect isn't very compelling, American viewers get a useful window into the political fault lines of Russian and Chechen culture. Furthermore, the characters actors assembled to deliberate the fate of a Chechen teenager are first-rate. Rated PG-13. —DF

ANGELS AND DEMONS—In this follow-up to The Da Vinci Code, Tom Hanks returns as symbologist Robert Langdon, again trying to uncover the dastardly plans of another occult society within the Catholic Church. This time, the suspect is the ambigram-prone Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era association purportedly looking to punish the Church for its past denunciation of science by destroying Vatican City and the College of Cardinals using a canister of stolen antimatter. In other words, author Dan Brown and director Ron Howard return to stoke the fires of conspiratorial muckrakers. Langdon goes about spouting one dollop of theological mumbo-jumbo after another, each prompting another leg in what becomes an extended travelogue through the streets of Rome and the Universal Studios back lot. Howard moves matters along at a brisker pace than his languid 2006 Da Vinci Code adaptation. But, in the end, there's little difference between this and the claptrap of National Treasure. Read our review. Rated PG-13. —NM

SIN NOMBRE—A Spanish language film, and Sundance honoree, about a Honduran teen yearning for life in the United States, with unexpected consequences. Rated R.

Current Releases

17 AGAINFreaky Friday with boys, as High School Musical's dreamy Zac Efron is renovated as the sweetheart of a new demographic. Rated PG. —LB

ADVENTURELAND—Everyone who ever had a crappy summer job during their younger years can relate to the subculture in Adventureland. When his parents are suddenly unable to fund a post-college graduation European dream vacation or tuition to journalism school at Columbia University, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) must settle for a menial job d'été as a carnie running rickety rides and rigged games at the local amusement park. The formulaic plot evokes dozens of similar coming-of-age dramedies such as Garden State and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist that similarly fail to rise to the level of a John Hughes '80s demi-classic. Rated R. —NM

BATTLE FOR TERRA—In many ways, Battle for Terra is cashing in on the Wall-E formula of an environmentally and socially conscious sci-fi for kids. In Battle for Terra, the humans have left Earth after blowing it up and now wander through space in a rusted-up mother ship looking for another planet to live on. Cut to Terra, a peaceful world inhabited by flying whales and little people who look like sentient sperm. The humans begin to arbitrarily bomb the little people, and a soldier (voiced by Luke Wilson) who crash-lands is rescued by a young girl named Mala (Evan Rachel Wood), who teaches him that you don't have to bomb people to get what you want. A lot of really questionable science follows, and a robot (David Cross) that strongly resembles Wall-E helps them out by being programmed with the villain's master plan and a laser that teaches English. Still, the film is an interesting reverse on the alien-invasion device, and the ending, while improbable, is touching enough to make you feel a little hope for humans yet. Rated PG. —HT

EARTH—In keeping with its ecological bent, footage in this documentary is recycled from Planet Earth, the 2005 BBC series last seen in the DVD collections of those looking to give their new high-definition televisions a test drive. The spectacular, new film traverses the globe from Arctic stem to Antarctic stern, interspersing its visual grandeur with an ecological message that drives home the consequences of climate change. Rated G. —NM

EVERLASTING MOMENTS—This sepia-soaked film tells the true story of Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen), a 1900s Swedish woman who copes with her abusive marriage and hardscrabble life by dusting off a vintage camera. The obvious irony is that Maria escapes reality via the stylized rendering of it, much like the worldwide masses who trek to nickelodeons each week. Troell's polished, expert direction captures an era of change in which acceptance in the temperance society was of fleeting importance, while socialism and the cinematheque were the ways of the future. Although the screenplay is austere and slow-moving, it boasts satisfying character studies and sturdy performances, particularly that of Heiskanen. Rated PG-13. —NM

FIGHTING—Jean Claude Van Damme's Kickboxer is dusted off for a new generation, with the tale of a talented pugilist making his way through a metropolitan fighting circuit. With Channing Tatum. Rated PG-13.

GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST—In this retread of A Christmas Carol (sans Christmas, caroling and Tiny Tim), Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) is a Don Juan fashion photographer who meets the ghost of his dead playboy Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas) during a visit to the family manse. Rated PG-13. —SE

IS ANYBODY THERE?—In the late 1980s, 10-year-old Edward (Bill Milner) lives with his parents (Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey), who run an old-folks home in rural England. "Lives" is a misleading term, since Edward is obsessed with supernatural phenomena, to the point of shunning people his own age, as well as resenting his family's profession. When Clarence (Michael Caine), an illusionist in his better days, comes to live at the home, he and Edward form an unlikely relationship, bonding over questions of life and mortality. The bleak atmosphere and subject matter make this film a tearjerker, but strong performances help it to be an emotionally satisfying one. Rated PG-13. —SE

MONSTERS VS ALIENS—1950s creature-feature schlock meets high-tech parody in this slight but heady animated flick that subsists on eye-popping visuals (the 3-D version comes highly recommended), witty one-liners and spot-on voice casting. Rated PG. —NM

NEXT DAY AIR—Director Benny Boom makes the leap from directing music videos for 50 Cent and Nas to channeling his inner Guy Ritchie in this hyperkinetic hip-hop crime comedy. The filmmakers might believe they are striking some blow for cinematic equality in creating a film in which all the characters are people of color. But, what are they really saying when all the African-Americans are gun-toting, pot-smoking psychopaths and the Latinos are murderous drug dealers who run cockfighting rings on the side? Rated R. —NM

OBSESSED—Fact is, there's little daylight between the racism that infects Birth of a Nation and this nonsense, which perpetuates the pervasive, insidious fear that white harlots are laying in wait to lure away successful black men. The key difference is that Obsessed is a really, really bad movie. Rated PG-13. —NM

SHALL WE KISS?—French director Emmanuel Mouret directs and stars as the hapless romantic leading man in this story within a story that shares more than a little with the Woody Allen repertoire. Shall We Kiss begins with a date, wherein the woman tells the man the story of an innocently begun affair that ended up devastating its participants' loved ones, as a means of explaining why she won't be engaging in a good night kiss. With literary plotting and direction, Mouret explores the consequences of selfish behavior, but it's the film's lighthearted philosophizing about matters of the heart that hints at a return to funny, sexy movies we expect from France. Not rated. —DF

THE SOLOIST—This film recounts the real-life relationship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and the subject of an acclaimed series of his newspaper articles, a homeless, schizophrenic musician named Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx). Downey's eccentric talent, Foxx's earnest (if clichéd) portrayal and a cascade of melodious Beethoven compensate for a narrative embellished with such grace notes as the plight of the homeless, the decline of print journalism and the best way to combat raccoon infestation. Rated PG-13. —NM

STAR TREK—With its Gen-Y tableau and whiz-bang F/X, this isn't your father's Star Trek. And, although it is set during the formative years of the crew of the Starship Enterprise, it is not strictly a prequel. Rather, it is an alternate timeline, visited by a Romulan marauder from the future named Nero (Eric Bana), who's looking to exact revenge on the Federation and one particular native of Vulcan for failing to save Nero's planet from destruction. Fear not, Trekkies: director J.J. Abrams preserves all the traits of the now-iconic characters. The difference is that Abrams, a clever filmmaker, understands how to make rock-'em sock-'em entertainment that can stand alone without its iconic underpinning. Rated PG-13. —NM

STATE OF PLAY—Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), a reporter for the "Washington Globe" teams up with Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), who runs a political blog for the paper, to chase a big story involving Cal's college chum, a congressman played by Ben Affleck. Rated PG-13. —NG

SUNSHINE CLEANINGSunshine Cleaning is a pleasant drama about sisters Rose and Norah (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, great together) who start a business cleaning up crime scenes. Unfortunately, Sunshine is burdened by a shoehorned back story and superfluous side stories that distract from the struggles of starting a business and the chemistry that Adams and Blunt have with each other. Rated R. —NG

TULPAN—This film is set in the harsh, windswept steppes of Kazakhstan, but put the mockery of Sacha Baron Cohen out of your mind. Instead, this international co-production, directed by the Russian-Kazakh Sergei Dvortsevoy, is generically similar to last year's tale of the Mongolian steppes, Tuya's Marriage. Again, we're in the company of tough, unsentimental shepherds who live in yurts and eke out a sparse living while dreaming of better lives. Tulpan falls on the lighter end of the spectrum, as it concerns a hapless young man's quest for a bride—in a region where women are scarcer than water. (The film's title turns out to be a brilliant joke.) But there's sparkling cinema at work, as well: The showstoppers include a sheep roundup in the midst of a sandstorm and a grueling scene of delivering a lamb. Not rated. —DF

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE—Superhero mythologies tend to sit on the side of the complex and obscure, with back stories streaming in multiple directions. Not so for Marvel Comics' steel-fisted mutant, Wolverine, whose origin tale—as presented here—is as dusty as an old history book. The sinewy Hugh Jackman is a good sport, working the adamantium-clawed mutant's inner turmoil and dysfunctional relationship with his brother, Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), into a story of makeshift emotional depth. But even with a healthy dose of F/X-driven violence, the weak plotting and dialogue destroy the momentum, leaving Wolverine's more interesting underpinnings on the cutting room floor. This film fails both newcomers and diehards, as director Gavin Hood trades ferocity for feeling; CGI wanderlust for substance. Rated PG-13. —KJ
