Opening This Week

IS ANYBODY THERE?—Michael Caine stars as an elderly magician who befriends a teenage boy growing up in a retirement home. Rated PG-13.

NEXT DAY AIR—Director Benny Boom ("if that's your real name...") makes the leap from directing music videos for 50 Cent and Nas to channeling his inner Guy Ritchie in this hyperkinetic hip-hop crime comedy. The filmmakers might believe they are striking some blow for cinematic equality in creating a film in which all the characters are people of color. But, what are they really saying when all the African-Americans are gun-toting, pot-smoking psychopaths and the Latinos are murderous drug dealers who run cockfighting rings on the side? When a Philly delivery driver (Donald Faison) mistakenly takes a package containing 10 kilos of cocaine to an apartment inhabited by a couple of thieving thugs (Mike Epps and Wood Harris), it triggers a collision course of ultra-violent events. There's little that is remotely redeeming here, as already inane dialogue is garbled still through a series of stereotypical, slang-ridden accents. Only the inexplicably (or fortunately) underused Mos Def provides even a modicum of chuckles. Rated R. —NM

PARIS 36—The social, political and financial upheaval of 1930s France forms the unlikely and misbegotten backdrop for this schmaltzy slog through the travails of a moribund Parisian music hall. Archetypes pile atop clichés: There's a kindly old stagehand, a goofy comic, a hunky ladies' man, a child accordion prodigy and a villain in the form of a fascist landlord. Director Christophe Barratier (The Chorus) attempts to prepare a puff pastry of historical recall and mythical nostalgia. However, his simple-minded depiction of the rise of socialism and anti-Semitism is Benigni-esque, while the Hallmark rendering of French theater is overly sentimental and, during one keynote production number, oddly anachronistic. The lone saving grace is an ingénue-turned-chanteuse named Douce, played by newcomer Nora Arnezeder, who lights up the screen with her voice and comely visage. The film lives and dies by her presence. Rated PG-13. —NM

STAR TREK—With its Gen-Y tableau and whiz-bang F/X, this isn't your father's Star Trek. And, although it is set during the formative years of the crew of the Starship Enterprise, it is not strictly a prequel. Rather, it is an alternate timeline, visited by a Romulan marauder from the future named Nero (Eric Bana), who's looking to exact revenge on the Federation and one particular native of Vulcan for failing to save Nero's planet from destruction. Fear not, Trekkies: director J.J. Abrams preserves all the familiar traits of the now-iconic characters. The difference is that Abrams, a clever and skilled filmmaker, understands how to make rock-'em sock-'em entertainment that can stand alone without its iconic underpinning. Set your phasers on "fun." Read our review. Rated PG-13. —NM

Current Releases

17 AGAINFreaky Friday with boys, as HSM's dreamy Zac Efron is renovated as the sweetheart of a new demographic. Blatantly derivative (at one point, a groaning table of inspirational texts is consulted) with Brian Doyle Murray as a twinkly spirit guide urging weary adult Mike (Matthew Perry) toward a senior-year redo. Efron is a cutie pie, no denying, and the banter with BFF Ned (puckish Thomas Lennon) is enjoyable. Ned is 17 forever—single, rich and awash in fanboy collectibles, and Mike's worthiness is validated by his loyalty to the former class dork. The film also contains one of those clichéd wild parties, though, and the sex-ed class, even with Margaret Cho in charge, is a cop-out. If Mike should have learned anything from his life's wreckage, it is: Use a condom! But, the film's sweetness triumphs, vanquishing cynical rom-coms aimed at more knowing audiences. Rated PG. —LB

ADVENTURELAND—Everyone who ever had a crappy summer job during their younger years can relate to the subculture in Adventureland. When his parents are suddenly unable to fund a post-college graduation European dream vacation or tuition to journalism school at Columbia University, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) must settle for a menial job d'été as a carnie running rickety rides and rigged games at the local amusement park. The formulaic plot evokes dozens of similar coming-of-age dramedies such as Garden State and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist that similarly fail to rise to the level of a John Hughes '80s demi-classic. Writer-director Greg Mottola's seems to aim for a kindler, gentler version of his hit Superbad. But, in an effort to sate the ribald comedic sensibilities of the Apatow crowd and the arthouse sensibilities of the Sundance crowd, Mottola doesn't do justice to either camp. Rated R. —NM

BATTLE FOR TERRA— It seems like every time a CGI kids' movie works, immediately there is an imitator. In many ways, Battle for Terra is cashing in on the Wall-E formula of an environmentally and socially conscious sci-fi for kids. In Battle for Terra, the humans have left Earth after completely blowing it up and now wander through space in a rusted-up mother ship looking for another planet to live on. Cut to Terra, a peaceful world inhabited by flying whales and little people who look like sentient sperm. The humans begin to arbitrarily bomb the little people, and a soldier (voiced by Luke Wilson) who crash-lands is rescued by a young girl named Mala (Evan Rachel Wood), who teaches him that you don't have to bomb people to get what you want. A lot of really questionable science follows, and a robot (David Cross) that strongly resembles Wall-E helps them out by being programmed with the villain's master plan and a laser that teaches English. Still, the film is an interesting reverse on the alien-invasion device, and the ending, while improbable, is touching enough to make you feel a little hope for humans yet. Rated PG. —HT

CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE—Either the finest American film released this year or a racist, sexist mess, depending on who you ask, this sequel to the 2006 ultra-shoot-'em-up literally revives Jason Statham's Chev Chelios as he's forced to retrieve his stolen heart (yes, you read that correctly), while keeping his battery-powered replacement charged through electrocution and public sex on a racetrack. A relentless satire of action movie excess, the film is the sort that involves gun-toting strippers and gay bikers, porn stars on strike, a fight done in the style of a Godzilla film, and so many F-bombs that the film briefly stops to recap the number of times the protagonist is cursed out. Also, an unrecognizable David Carradine as a 100-year-old Asian crimelord named "Poon Dong," Bai Ling as a hooker who only speaks in subtitled broken English, Corey Haim with a mullet, and a shotgun that is used as a sexual instrument within the first 10 minutes. It's an amoral, hyperactive meth lab of a film that will likely send you to hell for enjoying it, but it's in on its own joke, and infinitely more entertaining than most action films that pretend to be realistic. Rated R. —ZS

DUPLICITY—There's a playful though infuriating glee in piecing together the plot of corporate espionage while basking in the glow of writer-director Tony Gilroy's romp—think The Thin Man meets David Mamet. Two corporate spies (Clive Owen and Julia Roberts) team up to game a rivalry between conglomerates for their personal gain while at the same time reconciling their affection and mistrust for each other. Rated PG-13. —NM

EARTH—In keeping with its ecological bent, footage in this documentary is recycled from Planet Earth, the 2005 BBC series last seen in the DVD collections of those looking to give their new high-definition televisions a test drive. The spectacular, new film traverses the globe from Arctic stem to Antarctic stern, interspersing its visual grandeur with an ecological message that drives home the consequences of climate change. At a blissfully brief 96 minutes, the film fades to black before monotony—and James Earl Jones' stentorian narration—has the chance to take root, although several locales, notably the Amazon rain forest, merited more illumination. For all the sweeping vistas and oceanic exploration, no moments are more jaw-dropping than the slow-motion footage—accompanied by George Fenton's classical composition—of a cheetah and great white shark pursuing their prey. Rated G. —NM

EVERLASTING MOMENTS—This sepia-soaked film from 78-year-old Swedish director Jan Troell (The Emigrants) tells the true story of Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen), a 1900s Swedish woman who copes with her abusive marriage and hardscrabble life by dusting off a vintage camera and indulging her latent love of photography. The obvious irony is that Maria escapes reality via the stylized rendering of it, much like the worldwide masses who trek to nickelodeons each week. Troell's polished, expert direction captures an era of change in which acceptance in the temperance society was of fleeting importance, while socialism and the cinematheque were the ways of the future. Although the screenplay is austere and slow-moving, it boasts satisfying character studies and sturdy performances, particularly that of Heiskanen. Rated PG-13. —NM

FIGHTING—Jean Claude Van Damme's Kickboxer is dusted off for a new generation, with the tale of a talented pugilist making his way through a metropolitan fighting circuit. With Channing Tatum. Rated PG-13.

GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST—In this modern retread of A Christmas Carol (sans Christmas, caroling and Tiny Tim), Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) is a Don Juan fashion photographer who meets the ghost of his dead playboy Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas) during a visit to the family manse. Uncle Wayne warns his promiscuous nephew that he will be visited by three ghosts, who will proceed to scare him into changing his ways. Much like the various characters that rail over Connor's lack of redeeming qualities, there's little to like about this movie, aside from the "carpe diem for love" message that pervades the third act. Excluding the bright spot of Emma Stone, the supporting cast of Lacey Chabert, Jennifer Garner, Anne Archer and Daniel Sunjata is largely wasted, existing only as counterpoints to showcase McCounaughey's sleepy grin and sloe-gin drawl. Rated PG-13. —SE

HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE—Only a Faustian bargain can explain the stardom of Miley Cyrus, but it's our souls that are left picking up the tab when subjected to the mind-numbing idiocy of this sequel. Caught up in the insular popularity of her celebrity alter ego, Miley is shanghaied by her dad (Billy Ray Cyrus) back to her Tennessee home for some "Hannah detox." Miley pratfalls her way through such authentic, homespun therapy as feedin' chickens, ridin' horses, gatherin' eggs and foot-stompin' hoedowns with Rascal Flatts and ... oh no, please, not Taylor Swift. Rated G. —NM

MONSTERS VS ALIENS—1950s creature-feature schlock meets high-tech parody in this slight but heady animated flick that subsists on eye-popping visuals (the 3-D version comes highly recommended), witty one-liners and spot-on voice casting. Rated PG. —NM

OBSESSED—Fact is, there's little daylight between the racism that infects Birth of a Nation and this nonsense, which perpetuates the pervasive, insidious fear that white harlots are laying in wait to lure away successful black men. The key difference is that Obsessed is a really, really bad movie. Brokerage firm VP Derek (The Wire's Idris Elba) finds himself the target of the advances of a slinky blond temp, Lisa (Friends' Ali Larter), much to the eventual chagrin of Derek's wife, Sharon (Beyoncé Knowles). Yes, this is the umpteenth dozen retread of Fatal Attraction. The difference is that while Adrian Lyne's cult-classic shrewdly contrasts a slattern's insanity with a bedswerver's immorality, Derek's fidelity and nobility are not really called into question. Absent any overt enticement, we are never clear why Lisa infatuates over him other than he is nice and she is deranged. Any attempt at in-depth analysis notwithstanding, Obsessed is simply a poorly made film, replete with ridiculous dialogue muttered by an overactors' troupe: Knowles is typically inept, Elba is unusually off-kilter and Larter is laughably cartoonish. This is a film for those who watch the Lifetime Movie Network for edge-of-your-seat entertainment. Rated PG-13. —NM

SHALL WE KISS?—French director Emmanuel Mouret directs and stars as the hapless romantic leading man in this story within a story that shares more than a little with the Woody Allen repertoire. Shall We Kiss begins with a date, wherein the woman tells the man the story of an innocently begun affair that ended up devastating its participants' loved ones, as a means of explaining why she won't be engaging in a good night kiss. With literary plotting and direction, Mouret explores the consequences of selfish behavior, but it's the film's lighthearted philosophizing about matters of the heart that hints at a return to funny, sexy movies we expect from France. Not rated. —DF

THE SOLOIST—This film recounts the real-life relationship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and the subject of an acclaimed series of his newspaper articles, a homeless, schizophrenic musician named Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx). Downey's eccentric talent, Foxx's earnest (if clichéd) portrayal and a cascade of melodious Beethoven compensate for a narrative embellished with such grace notes as the plight of the homeless, the decline of print journalism and the best way to combat raccoon infestation. Rated PG-13. —NM

STATE OF PLAY—Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), a reporter for the "Washington Globe" teams up with Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), who runs a political blog for the paper, to chase a big story involving Cal's college chum, a congressman played by Ben Affleck. Though the story is fueled by a healthy dose of paranoia about the link between murders of Washington, D.C., citizens and the privatization of homeland security, it's the rivalry between online and print, as represented by McAdams and Crowe, that steals the show. Rated PG-13. —NG

SUNSHINE CLEANINGSunshine Cleaning is a pleasant drama about sisters Rose and Norah (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, great together) who start a business cleaning up crime scenes. Unfortunately, Sunshine is burdened by a shoehorned back story and superfluous side stories that distract from the struggles of starting a business and the chemistry that Adams and Blunt have with each other. Rated R. —NG

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE—Hugh Jackman returns to the superhero franchise that made him a star, this time as the eponymous central character with retractable claws and a mean streak. Rated PG-13.
