Opening This Week

EARTH—In keeping with its ecological bent, footage in this documentary is recycled from Planet Earth, the 2005 BBC series last seen in the DVD collections of those looking to give their new high-definition televisions a test drive. The spectacular, new film traverses the globe from Arctic stem to Antarctic stern, interspersing its visual grandeur with an ecological message that drives home the consequences of climate change. At a blissfully brief 96 minutes, the film fades to black before monotony—and James Earl Jones' stentorian narration—has the chance to take root, although several locales, notably the Amazon rain forest, merited more illumination. For all the sweeping vistas and oceanic exploration, no moments are more jaw-dropping than the slow-motion footage—accompanied by George Fenton's classical composition—of a cheetah and great white shark pursuing their prey. Rated G. —NM

EVERLASTING MOMENTS—This sepia-soaked film from 78-year-old Swedish director Jan Troell (The Emigrants) tells the true story of Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen), a 1900s Swedish woman who copes with her abusive marriage and hardscrabble life by dusting off a vintage camera and indulging her latent love of photography. The obvious irony is that Maria escapes reality via the stylized rendering of it, much like the worldwide masses who trek to nickelodeons each week. Troell's polished, expert direction captures an era of change in which acceptance in the temperance society was of fleeting importance, while socialism and the cinematheque were the ways of the future. Although the screenplay is austere and slow-moving, it boasts satisfying character studies and sturdy performances, particularly that of Heiskanen. Rated PG-13. —NM

FIGHTING—Jean Claude Van Damme's Kickboxer is dusted off for a new generation, with the tale of a talented pugilist making his way through a metropolitan fighting circuit. With Channing Tatum. Rated PG-13.

THE INFORMERS—Billy Bob Thornton and Kim Basinger star in this tale of the dark underbelly of Hollywood. It's adapted from a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, and other '80s icons in the film include Mickey Rourke and Winona Ryder. This is also the last film of the late Brad Renfro. Rated R.

OBSESSED—Ali Larter and Beyonce star in a Fatal Attraction-style nailbiter about a man (The Wire's Idris Elba) who has an affair with the totally wrong woman. Rated PG-13.

THE SOLOIST—The real-life relationship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and the subject of an acclaimed series of his newspaper articles, a homeless, schizophrenic musician named Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), finally finds its way into theaters after being pushed from its original awards-season release date last December. That ominous warning sign aside, Downey's eccentric talent, Foxx's earnest (if clichéd) portrayal, and a cascade of melodious Beethoven compensate for an overstuffed narrative that includes the plight of the homeless, the decline of print journalism, and the best way to combat raccoon infestation. Like in his last film, Atonement, Joe Wright's direction is as variable as Ayers' mental state—at times truly virtuoso, at others unpredictable and overbearing. Moreover, Wright suffers from the same disconnect as other European directors who tackle the issues of race, poverty and class in America. Perhaps that contributes to the irony Wright conjures when, after touching on the exploitative side of Lopez's relationship with Ayers, he ropes in hundreds of actual homeless people from Los Angeles' Skid Row—many of them physically and/or mentally handicapped—as extras. Rated PG-13. —NM

TOKYO!—A trio of arty Twilight Zone-ish parables about urban alienation, Tokyo! is an assemblage by directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Joon-Ho Bong, riffing ponderously on the city's doomsday atmosphere. Gondry's "Interior Decoration" works best, as the Science of Sleep director sculpts his Scrap Exchange aesthetic around the story of a young couple whose arrival in the metropolis strains their romance. The girl's professed lack of a dream-life provokes a surreal physical transformation. Carax (Les Amants du Pont Neuf) follows an anarchic wild man named Merde ("Shit") as he emerges from a manhole wreaking havoc. Bearing the heaviest metaphorical burden, this segment drags during long exchanges between Merde and his lawyer in an imaginary language. In Korean director Bong's "Shaking Tokyo," a hermit surrounded by geometric towers of pizza boxes and toilet-paper rolls finally makes eye contact after 11 years, with catastrophic consequences. This anthology is ambitious and imaginative ... but not quite enough. Not rated. —LB

Current Releases

17 AGAIN—Freaky Friday with boys, as HSM's dreamy Zac Efron is renovated as the sweetheart of a new demographic. Blatantly derivative (at one point, a groaning table of inspirational texts is consulted) with Brian Doyle Murray as a twinkly spirit guide urging weary adult Mike (Matthew Perry) toward a senior-year redo. Efron is a cutie pie, no denying, and the banter with BFF Ned (puckish Thomas Lennon) is enjoyable. Ned is 17 forever—single, rich and awash in fanboy collectibles, and Mike's worthiness is validated by his loyalty to the former class dork. The film also contains one of those clichéd wild parties, though, and the sex-ed class, even with Margaret Cho in charge, is a cop-out. If Mike should have learned anything from his life's wreckage, it is: Use a condom! But, the film's sweetness triumphs, vanquishing cynical rom-coms aimed at more knowing audiences. Rated PG. —LB

ADVENTURELAND—Adrift and in need of funds, James (Jesse Eisenberg) settles for a menial job running rigged games at the local amusement park. The plot evokes dozens of similar coming-of-age dramedies such as Garden State and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist that similarly fail to rise to the level of a John Hughes '80s demi-classic. Rated R. —NM

CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE—The indefatigable Jason Statham returns as hit man Chev Chelios, who, having survived a 10,000-foot drop from an airplane and a mysterious Chinese poison, now must regularly electrocute himself to stay alive. Rated R.

DUPLICITY—There's a playful though infuriating glee in piecing together the plot of corporate espionage while basking in the glow of writer-director Tony Gilroy's romp—think The Thin Man meets David Mamet. Two corporate spies (Clive Owen and Julia Roberts) team up to game a rivalry between conglomerates for their personal gain while at the same time reconciling their affection and mistrust for each other. Rated PG-13. —NM

THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD—What starts out seeming to be an excruciating occasion for John Malkovich to chew scenery ends up as a surprisingly deft, empathetic look at the culture of the entertainment industry's minor leagues. Malkovich is the title character, a washed-up mentalist playing in half-filled halls in America's hinterlands. His comeback attempt, which consumes most of the film, is narrated through the eyes of Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), a law school dropout making a foray into a showbiz career. Rated PG. —DF

HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE—Only a Faustian bargain can explain the stardom of Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, but it's our souls that are left picking up the tab when subjected to the mind-numbing idiocy of this sequel. Caught up in the insular popularity of her celebrity alter ego, Miley is shanghaied by her dad (Billy Ray Cyrus) back to her Tennessee home for some "Hannah detox." Miley pratfalls her way through such authentic, homespun therapy as feedin' chickens, ridin' horses, gatherin' eggs and foot-stompin' hoedowns with Rascal Flatts and ... oh no, please, not Taylor Swift. Rated G. —NM

THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT—This bland haunted-house story doesn't offer many spooks, but should have considered sketching details into any of the relationships between its characters. But maybe the most disappointing thing about it is that it refuses to offer the pleasant details that should come with a period piece: It takes place in 1987, though you'd never know it from the hair, clothes, cars or from the fact that Matt has no idea what ectoplasm is. Wouldn't he have just seen Ghostbusters? Rated PG-13. —NG

HUNGER—British video artist Steve McQueen makes his cinematic debut with this retelling of the 1980s hunger strike instigated by Irish Republican Army leader Bobby Sands. Not rated.

I LOVE YOU, MAN—This delightfully uncomplicated bromance draws from the Judd Apatow casting pool in a formula-flipping tale about a friendless milquetoast, Peter (Paul Rudd), whose fiancée, Zooey (Rashida Jones), pushes him into man-dates in search of a BFF and, hopefully, best man for their wedding. Rated R. —NM

KNOWING—One day, astrophysicist John Koestler's precocious son brings home an ancient paper crammed with numbers from a 1959 time capsule. Director Alex Proyas wins us over with a thoughtful narrative focused on the secret nature of the world humans inhabit and a penchant for weird science TV (The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits) that asks the questions we are afraid to know the answers to. Rated PG-13. —KJ

MONSTERS VS ALIENS—1950s creature-feature schlock meets high-tech parody in this slight but heady animated flick that subsists on eye-popping visuals (the 3-D version comes highly recommended), witty one-liners and spot-on voice casting. Rated PG. —NM

OBSERVE AND REPORT—In North Carolina native Jody Hill's latest, shopping mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogan) is the unhinged byproduct of the Bush-era delusion that sees evildoers around every kiosk. So, when a serial flasher turns the mall into his personal peep show, Ronnie obsesses over bringing the perp to justice as a springboard to becoming an true police officer and impressing a dingy cosmetics salesgirl (Anna Faris). The inanity is offbeat and uproarious at times, but the script is rudderless and mean-spirited—there are only so many laughs you can comfortably draw from tableaus of mental illness, substance abuse, racism and date rape. Rated R. —NM

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN—Disney revisits their Witch Mountain franchise in this innocuous diversion that is pleasant enough viewing granted you don't bother applying even a modicum of logic. Rated PG. —NM

STATE OF PLAY— Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), a reporter for the "Washington Globe" teams up with Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), who runs a political blog for the paper, to chase a big story involving Cal's college chum, a congressman played by Ben Affleck. Though the story is fueled by a healthy dose of paranoia about the link between murders of Washington, D.C., citizens and the privatization of homeland security, it's the rivalry between online and print, as represented by McAdams and Crowe, that steals the show. Rated PG-13. —NG

SUNSHINE CLEANING—Sunshine Cleaning is a pleasant drama about sisters Rose and Norah (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, great together) who start a business cleaning up crime scenes. Unfortunately, Sunshine is burdened by a shoehorned back story and superfluous side stories that distract from the struggles of starting a business and the chemistry that Adams and Blunt have with each other. Rated R. —NG
