AUSTRALIA—Australia is no less than a Gone with the Wind for the new millennium. Director Baz Luhrmann layers the Western, the war movie and the romantic epic together with conniving villains and meditations on race and history into an absorbing and eye-catching tour de force. Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), an uptight aristocrat, arrives in her remote Australian cattle station to find her husband murdered. She prevails upon the drover (Hugh Jackman) for help, and ravishing romance soon follows. Luhrmann says he dreamed of making an epic about his homeland that echoed the adventure films he loved as a boy, and Australia is a fine addition to the canon of classic films about resourceful people living in tumultuous times. Luhrmann, however, seems to have taken the "epic" moniker rather seriously—his film is around three hours long (isn't it time to reinvent the intermission, too?)—and while it does have its longeurs (and two or three climaxes), its rip-roaring pace rarely flags. JCVD—In JCVD, action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme turns in an earnest and self-pitying performance as himself. Going into a bank to make a routine withdrawal, he stumbles into a robbery, and is forced by the gang to be their negotiator. The opening scene is a marvel, shot in a virtuosic single take, but none of the directorial artistry displayed in the beginning is in evidence for the rest of JCVD. What could have been a crisp little concept movie (how do you say Phone Booth in French?) is instead a limply paced, murky-looking attempt to state the obvious: that big action stars are not, in fact, invincible. TRANSPORTER 3—The other international man of mystery to hit the big screen this season is Frank Martin (Jason Statham), professional pugilist, a character whose appeal lies mainly in his penchant for pummeling enemies while shirtless. This third installment of the Luc Besson-produced action series follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, serving up plenty of road rage eye candy, mano a mano fights in slow motion and the inevitable explosions that follow both. This time around, Statham plays courier for a ragtag team of environmental terrorists whose devious scheme requires the kidnapping and transporting of the long-legged daughter of that nation's EPA chief. As in previous Transporter outings, Statham has to stomach his self-loathing long enough to fight the good fight and win the girl. Though the first two Transporter films were brainless, they were occasionally fun; in this one, the anemic plot and inane dialogue sully the charm of Statham's likeable antihero. Rated PG-13. —KJ
YUVVRAAJ (PRINCE)—A battle over a billion-dollar inheritance pits an autistic older brother (Anil Kapoor) against his feckless younger siblings (Salman Khan, Zayed Khan). An angelic cello-miming gazelle (Katrina Kaif) tries to help. Like a 1980s relic discovered in a time capsule, Yuvvraaj is an incoherent, plotless monstrosity with terrible acting, ludicrous dialogue, generic music and hideous costumes. It's the sort of movie where someone feels sick and another character instantly says, "He's been poisoned!" and so, he has. Subhash Ghai's former reputation as a competent director is the only reason this misbegotten mishegos ever arrived in front of a camera. —LB
BOLT—The star of this 3-D animated spectacle is the titular dog (voiced by John Travolta), a small white shepard who's lived his whole life as the star of his own action TV show, in which he possesses superpowers and does battle alongside his owner, a young girl named Penny (Miley Cyrus). After Bolt gets accidentally airmailed off the studio lot, he embarks on a cross-country journey back to Hollywood, aided by a loner feline and an over-caffeinated, TV-addicted hamster. A cleverer plot would delve more into the film's central query of whether it is better to live an extraordinary fantasy or a mundane reality. Bolt bears the earmarks of good breeding, its dramatic bite doesn't quite match up to its bark. Rated PG. —NM
THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS—Adapted from John Boyce's novel, this Holocaust film's strength lies in the power of the audience's preexisting ideas about the horrors of the era. 8-year-old Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and his family move near the Jewish concentration camp where his father (David Thewlis) is commandant. Searching for adventure, Bruno wanders near the camp's fenced perimeter, where he befriends a young prisoner named Shmuel (Jack Scanlon). There is subtle power channeled through Bruno's naiveté that writer-director Mark Herman (Little Voice) uses to craft a daedal, affecting fable. But, then comes the dispiriting ending, which is overwrought, illogical, and emotionally unjustifiable. Reviewed on page 30. Rated PG-13. —NM

HAPPY-GO-LUCKY—Happy-Go-Lucky is a portrait of a primary school teacher named Poppy, a character who could have been an obnoxious wide-eyed optimist but is in this film a unique, believable young woman with an exacting wit and nimble perception, always equipped with a comeback. She's the antidote to vapid movie happiness, the anti-Amelie. Mike Leigh's film has an unforced flow, driven by the steady, often silly stream of Poppy's zingers, comebacks, one-liners, and mini-monologues. Sally Hawkins' performance carries the movie, baring the multiple layers of her character's charm and intellect. Rated R. —NG
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR—Poured from the same pop-culture fount as Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers and The Cheetah Girls, this megawatt Disney Channel movie franchise finds its heritage in the cardigan karaoke of the 1950s, the beach party films of the 1960s, and Fame in the 1980s. In other words, good clean fun. Rated G. —NM
MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA—The best thing that can be said about this animated sequel is that it will entertain youngsters under the age of 10. Of course, the same can be said about an animatronic jug band at Chuck E. Cheese's, which might, come to think of it, rival the second Madagascar film in plot depth and originality. For kids, the plotting merely marks time between appearances by Sacha Baron Cohen's hyperactive, self-assured lemur Julien. For every one else, only the return of those sardonic penguins provides any genuine chuckles. Rated PG. —NM

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED—Anne Hathaway plays Kym, a recovering junkie who comes home for her sister Rachel's wedding. Kym blames her insecurities on her family, even as she tries to make amends with Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt). While too many scenes focus on Kym and Rachel hammering out their differences, a perfect supporting cast and director Jonathan Demme's keen eye for how to incorporate the large ensemble of wedding guests makes Rachel much better than its limp premise promises. Rated R. —NG

QUANTUM OF SOLACE—Despite its heralded reboot with Daniel Craig as a buffer, badder and meaner Bond, the latest entry in the 007 franchise is filled with conservative fodder that is surprisingly dependent on plot devices and ideas from earlier, less edgy incarnations. This time, Bond chases a shadowy syndicate, QUANTUM, that has infiltrated MI6 and the CIA, evoking the Red Scare fears of the 1950s. The villain du jour is the lamely dubbed Dominic Greene (whatever happened to Oddjob and May Day?), played by Mathieu Amalric. What elevates even this middling Bond chapter is the presence of Craig. His 007 is taciturn and seemingly emotionally cold, but he is actually a more human Bond, one who bleeds when injured and constantly does battle with his stifling neuroses. Rated PG-13. —NM

RELIGULOUS—Despite Bill Maher's barely tolerable smarm and consistent celebrity condescension, this send-up of both religious belief and the sociopolitical systems it spawns mostly succeeds as a call for common sense. Rated R. —DGC
ROLE MODELS—A couple of energy drink reps-turned-reprobates (or is it the other way around?) must work off court-ordered community service by serving as Big Brothers to two troubled youths. A number of guilty giggles litter a screenplay written by the team behind the 1990s MTV sketch comedy show, The State. Rated R. —NM
THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES—Resting on a metaphor as hollow as a honey comb, this Hallmark Hall of Fame refugee tells the mid-1960s fable of a 14-year-old white girl, Lily (Dakota Fanning) and her black caregiver, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), who escape a racist town in South Carolina for a marginally less racist one. There, they stumble across a bee farm run by three sisters: August, the mammy (Queen Latifah); May, the mystical dimwit (Sophie Okonedo); and June, the independent-minded activist (Alicia Keys). Rated PG-13. —NM

SOUL MEN—Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac) are former backup singers in a 1960s R&B trio who became estranged after their lead left for a successful solo career. After their ex-partner dies, Hinds and Henderson call an uneasy truce and embark on a cross-country road trip for a tribute concert at Harlem's Apollo Theater. The result is a satisfying mix of hilarity and melancholy, the latter fueled by the recognition that Mac and Isaac Hayes, who makes a cameo, did not live to see this film's release. Rated R. —NM

SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK—Charlie Kaufman, star screenwriter of Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind makes his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York, and it's the best thing he's ever been attached to. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Caden Cotard, a deeply depressed theater director who uses a MacArthur grant to launch a massive project that is doomed to incompletion from the outset. Despite its gloomy subject and depressed central character, this is a fun film, and it works through its plethora of preoccupations—sickness, death, marriage, cleanliness, gender, depression, the illusory nature of time to name a few—with uncanny precision. Rated R. —NG

W—Oliver Stone's W. is a restless film that exhibits a fascinating tension between earnest message movie and bombastic cartoon. At its best, W. occupies the eerie area between Bush's manipulation of information and his inability to grasp it. Josh Brolin delivers a daffy, purposefully one-note performance as George W. Bush that is simultaneously simplistic and unnerving. While much of W. is a tough slog—some stretches are generic, some predictable—Stone occasionally shows his chops as a clever director making a deceptively goofy movie that gets into some pretty complicated territory. Rated R. —NGFilm times were updated Wednesday, Nov. 26.
