INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL—Sturdy, weathered Harrison Ford proves as worthy an action hero as any 65-year-old could be (no jokes, please), and the other elements of the Lucas-Spielberg blockbuster franchise remain recognizably intact. Set in 1957, the third Raiders of the Lost Ark sequel encompasses atomic blasts, the Roswell incident, Commie subversion, South American jungles, the usual f/x blizzard, plus lots of nods to '50s movies; its cast includes Karen Allen, Shia LaBeouf, John Hurt and Cate Blanchett in a Louise Brooks bob. Ultimately, the movie is diminished not by its contents but its context: With so many current films modeled on its tropes, younger viewers might well mistake it as a National Treasure rip-off. SON OF RAMBOW—The happiest revelation in this British comedy is that there is a lot more going on beyond its banal title and wispy premise. Produced by the filmmaking team of Hammer & Tongs—director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith—who were responsible for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (whether that's good or bad is a matter of taste). A grade-school odd couple embarks on a mission to film an ultra-amateur sequel to First Blood: Will (Bill Milner) is a nebbishy, fatherless moppet whose mother belongs to a devout religious sect, while Lee (Will Poulter) is a chain-smoking, parentless miscreant being raised by his detached yet domineering older brother. Writer-director Jennings packages a satisfying coming-of-age story with acute insights on the struggle to realize one's artistic vision and the perils and artificiality of celebrity. The two brilliant leads, the nimble integration of 1980s' Euro-pop-culture references, and just enough biting wit to give the film some teeth enhance a lovely fable that is alternatively amusing, saddening and inspiring. BABY MAMA—The most cautionary—and perplexing—aspect of this Tina Fey vehicle is that she did not write the screenplay. That (dis)credit goes to ex-Saturday Night Live scribe Michael McCullers, who also directs this surprisingly tepid take on pregnancy and surrogate motherhood. Fey, a new mother herself and the writer of Mean Girls and 30 Rock, appears more comfortable training her acerbic wit on milieus with which she is both familiar and disdainful of (high school, the world of broadcast television) than the miracle of childbirth. Rated PG-13. —NM
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN—The four kings and queens of C.S. Lewis' classic children's tales return to the big screen older and wiser in this second installment of the Narnia series. Here, the four Pevensie siblings are magically pulled back into the alternate universe of Narnia when Prince Caspian (British stage actor Ben Barnes) summons them with a mighty blow from a magic horn. It turns out the dishy Prince needs the siblings to help him claim heir to the throne. But this version of Narnia is doubly dark and malevolent, with Telmarine warlords ruling the forest and driving the innocent Narnians deep in the forest; the innocent charm of the first film is compromised in the epic battles and violent clashing of swords. Although it's stamped with a PG rating, this version of Narnia is Disney's Lord of the Rings-lite, with chatty bears, dwarves, mice and badgers thrown in to make it kid-friendly and mother-approved. Rated PG. —KJ

FLAWLESS—At the London Diamond Corp in 1960, the company's only female executive (Demi Moore), who's about to be dumped by her bosses, is approached by the firm's night janitor (Michael Caine) with the idea of teaming up on a heist. Taut and centered on a terrific mid-film plot twist, Michael Radford's stylish crime drama not only follows the genre rulebook with a pleasing thoroughness; it does so in a way that recalls the best high-end suspense films of the era in which it is set, the moment just before movies gained the brittle self-consciousness of art. Among its other virtues, Moore and Caine are both in top form, having fun with the basic conceit by taking it seriously. Rated PG-13. —GC
FORBIDDEN KINGDOM—Purportedly based on a classic Chinese novel, this synthetic martial arts flick actually comes off more like a wuxai rework of The Wizard of Oz. Young Bostonian Jason (Michael Angarano) is magically teleported to 16th-century China by a mystical golden staff that Jason must return to its rightful owner, the imprisoned Monkey King (Jet Li). A trio of misfits (including Jackie Chan and Li doing double duty) join Jason's journey through an Oriental Oz on their way to see the evil Jade (or is it Emerald?) Warlord (Collin Chou), who also covets the staff. The Chan/ Li duel is the film's best five minutes even if it's 10 years too late—but then there's a scene in which Li urinates on Chan's face. Rated PG-13. —NM

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL—Judd Apatow gave his imprimatur to this Jason Segel-scripted comedy about getting over a heartbreak, but it is Segel who is the real star. A Freaks and Geeks grad who now stars in the TV series How I Met Your Mother, Segel bares all and binds the film together, even through its draggy second half. Even if the specter of a dopey Everydude dating a famous celebrity, getting comped the penthouse suite at a Hawaii hotel and then scoring the prettiest girl at the resort is hard to believe, we somehow suspend our disbelief. Rated PG-13. —NM

HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY—The simple charm of Harold and Kumar's original odyssey to White Castle is lost in a sequel that is not as smart as its meta-tableau portends nor as dumb as its puerile humor suggests. Picking up at the end of the last film, our stoner heroes are arrested while flying to Amsterdam and exiled to Gitmo under suspicion they are part of an al-Qaeda-North Korean terrorist cell. They (too) quickly escape and embark on another rowdy road trip, this time to Texas. The comedy is decidedly raw—and uneven—but it skewers our cultural mores and PATRIOT Act-era political regime. In that way, it is not just Harold and Kumar, but all of us, who are still trying to escape from Guantánamo Bay. Rated R. —NM

IRON MAN—Though its efforts to make a contemporary comic-book morality play out of the war in Afghanistan are predictably risible, the summer's first would-be tentpole is several cuts above the norm, thanks to a witty script, Jon Favreau's energetic yet light-handed direction and, especially, Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in the title role, which brings the irreverent savoir faire of James Bond to a conscience-stricken arms manufacturer-slash-playboy. Adapted from the Marvel comic, the special effects-laden action romp boasts a nifty titanium aerodynamic suit for its hero and stellar supporting work from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges, who brings elements of Daddy Warbucks, Dick Cheney and John Huston to the tale's devious baddie. Rated PG-13. —GC
MADE OF HONOR—Yet another slack cut-and-paste rom com, Made of Honor is the reverse of My Best Friend's Wedding. Tom (TV's Patrick Dempsey, whose McDreaminess eludes me) doesn't love Hannah (stick-thin Michelle Monaghan) until she falls for a burly Scotsman on a business trip. Naturally, Tom consents to be her maid of honor to sabotage the wedding from within. This cobwebby plot can work, but with every interesting idea, like having Tom decide to take his duties seriously, the film puts on the brakes. Obviously, the creative directors fell all over themselves to keep even a hint of gayness from tainting Dempsey in a potentially girly situation—he's not MBFW's Rupert Everett, he's straight! Rated PG-13. —LB
MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS—Wong Kar-wai, the Hong Kong director of art-house faves including In the Mood for Love, makes his U.S. debut with an arty road film that's predictably longer on style and sensibility than dramatic substance. The story centers on lovelorn Elizabeth (singer Norah Jones) who skips between New York, Memphis and Las Vegas, encountering similarly unsatisfied characters played by Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Law. Wong's work with his cast, apart from unsure newcomer Jones, is strong, but the director obviously lavished far more time on the film's obsessive camera angles than on the script, which treats America as just another backdrop for a Wongian tale of romantic melancholy. Rated PG-13. —GC

SPEED RACER—People might complain these days when movies look like video games, but if ever a film needed to look like one it is Speed Racer, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the 1960s "Japanamation" cartoon about auto racing phenom Speed Racer and his fabulous gadget-filled car, the Mach 5. The Wachowski Brothers get a lot right in translating the animated cult hit to the big screen, including the dysfunctional but loving Racer family, the cheesy sense of fun and adventure—and yes, the car—yet in between every clever thing they nail there's a little too much grinding of the gears. Never mind. The ham and cheese is served up on fever-dream Wonder Bread with a tall glass of Kool-Aid, just in time for summer. Rated PG. —JPT

THEN SHE FOUND ME—Emerging from a decade of relative obscurity since her career peaks of winning an Oscar for her role in As Good as It Gets and starring in the long-running sitcom Mad About You, Helen Hunt's directing debut is strikingly affecting. Hunt stars as April, a pushing-40 schoolteacher who loses her husband and mother and subsequently finds two newcomers pushing their way into her life. This is an actor's film, filled with long, emotionally complex scenes with a topnotch cast that includes Bette Midler, Colin Firth and Matthew Broderick. Rated R. —DF
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS— This ultraformulaic rom-com largely delivers on its promise of a shrill, irreverent look at love and marriage. But, in lieu of wit, screenwriter Dana Fox concocts a predictable farce so uninspired its plot lines could have been drawn using crayon. After a drunken trip down the aisle of a Sin City wedding chapel, a dispute over a $3 million slot-machine jackpot causes the court to conscript misbegotten newlyweds Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher) into six months of unholy matrimony. See the film strictly for a decent supporting cast, highlighted by the first post-Daily Show film to effectively mine Rob Corddry's offbeat comic brand. Rated PG-13. —NM

YOUNG@HEART—Although it's grounded in the trite genre of Old People Doing Wacky Things and propelled by manipulative editing, a hard heart is required to deride this wonderful piece of uplift. Shot over seven weeks, this documentary chronicles the rehearsal period preceding a May 2006 concert by the titular New England-based chorus, a collection of senior citizens who've achieved worldwide acclaim for their renditions of classic and contemporary rock/ pop songs. Together, they transcend the fragility of life by forging a collective that is more enduring that its individual parts. Rating PG. —NMFilm times were updated Thursday, May 22.
