Opening This Week

BHOOTNATH—A mischievous boy (Aman Siddiqui) befriends Bhootnath (Amitabh Bachchan), a ghost living in the spooky house he shares with his fun-loving mom (Juhi Chawla). Why a star of Amitabh's stature would agree to star in a children's film may be explained by the praise heaped on Aamir Khan and his youthful co-star in last year's Taare Zamin Par. Not rated. —LB

MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS—Wong Kar-wai, the Hong Kong director of art-house faves including In the Mood for Love, makes his U.S. debut with an arty road film that's predictably longer on style and sensibility than dramatic substance. The story centers on lovelorn Elizabeth (singer Norah Jones) who skips between New York, Memphis and Las Vegas, encountering similarly unsatisfied characters played by Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Law. Wong's work with his cast, apart from unsure newcomer Jones, is strong, but the director obviously lavished far more time on the film's obsessive camera angles than on the script, which treats America as just another backdrop for a Wongian tale of romantic melancholy. CJ7The odd thing about this art-house item: It's probably great if you're 10 years old and don't mind a film in English-subtitled Chinese (how many 10-year-olds is that?). If, on the other hand, you're a grown-up fan of Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, a spectacularly clever martial arts fantasia, the director's plunge into cutesy kid stuff is likely to be disappointing if not stupefying. Basically a Sino E.T., the tale concerns a boy named Dicky (played by a 9-year-old girl, Xu Jiao) who finds a magical outer-space pal that looks like a Teletubby and speaks in bleeps. The special effects are OK, the story gooey and relentlessly formulaic. Rated PG. —GC

REDBELT—David Mamet has always been an eccentric filmmaker, but this oddball sports drama takes the tendency in the direction of bizarre wackiness. Apparently a personal interest in Brazilian jujitsu inspired Mamet to mount a tale in which an accomplished L.A. instructor in that sport (the excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor) finds his uncompromising principles attracting hard luck and temptation from all sides. Torn between being an art film and a martial arts film, Mamet's off-kilter potboiler is most notable for including plot twists and ideas that play like one weird non-sequitur after another, right up to a climactic fight that you can see coming from 10 miles off. It's sure been a long, strange trip from Glengarry Glen Ross to this loopy misfire. Read our review. Rated R. —GC

click to enlarge Speed Racer is waiting for you, in theaters everywhere Friday. - PHOTO COURTESY OF WARNER BROS.
SPEED RACER—People might complain these days when movies look like video games, but if ever a film needed to look like one it is Speed Racer, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the 1960s "Japanamation" cartoon about auto racing phenom Speed Racer and his fabulous gadget-filled car, the Mach 5. (Here's how long Hollywood has been trying to get a version made: This writer's first professional article was on the "upcoming" Speed Racer movie ... back in 1988.) The Wachowski Brothers get a lot right in translating the animated cult hit to the big screen, including the dysfunctional but loving Racer family, the cheesy sense of fun and adventure—and yes, the car—yet in between every clever thing they nail there's a little too much grinding of the gears. (And for a movie with so much ham-fisted exposition, there are times when you just can't tell what's going on). Never mind. The ham and cheese is served up on fever-dream Wonder Bread with a tall glass of Kool-Aid, just in time for summer. Rated PG. —JPT

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS— ... should have stayed in development hell. Actually, this ultraformulaic rom-com largely delivers on its promise of a shrill, irreverent look at love and marriage. But, in lieu of wit, screenwriter Dana Fox—whose sole previous credit is the even-more-insipid The Wedding Date—concocts a predictable farce so uninspired its plot lines could have been drawn using crayon. After a drunken trip down the aisle of a Sin City wedding chapel, a dispute over a $3 million slot-machine jackpot causes the court to conscript misbegotten newlyweds Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher) into six months of unholy matrimony. I grew weary of Diaz's brash, madcap act long ago, and although Kutcher is adept at playing the impudent hipster doofus, anything more complex causes him slip into some strange form of catatonia. See the film strictly for a decent supporting cast, highlighted by the first post-Daily Show film to effectively mine Rob Corddry's offbeat comic brand. Rated PG-13. —NM

Current Releases

21—Presuming its remarkable, true-story foundation will suffice, this loose adaptation of Ben Mezrich's best-selling book Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions eschews such pesky nuisances as character development and narrative cohesion. So enamored is director Robert Luketic of the allure of Sin City that the endless, neon-bathed montages come off like a promotional video for the Las Vegas tourism office. Rated PG-13. —NM

BABY MAMA—The most cautionary—and perplexing—aspect of this Tina Fey vehicle is that she did not write the screenplay. That (dis)credit goes to ex-Saturday Night Live scribe Michael McCullers, who also directs this surprisingly tepid take on pregnancy and surrogate motherhood. Fey, a new mother herself and the writer of Mean Girls and 30 Rock, appears more comfortable training her acerbic wit on milieus with which she is both familiar and disdainful of (high school, the world of broadcast television) than the miracle of childbirth. Rated PG-13. —NM

EXPELLED: NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED—Cynics might argue that the title of this pro-intelligent design documentary is well-suited to the multiplexes where it's playing. Rated PG.

FLAWLESS—At the London Diamond Corp in 1960, the company's only female executive (Demi Moore), who's about to be dumped by her bosses, is approached by the firm's night janitor (Michael Caine) with the idea of teaming up on a heist. Taut and centered on a terrific mid-film plot twist, Michael Radford's stylish crime drama not only follows the genre rulebook with a pleasing thoroughness; it does so in a way that recalls the best high-end suspense films of the era in which it is set, the moment just before movies gained the brittle self-consciousness of art. Among its other virtues, Moore and Caine are both in top form, having fun with the basic conceit by taking it seriously. Rated PG-13. —GC

FORBIDDEN KINGDOM—Purportedly based on a classic Chinese novel, this synthetic martial arts flick actually comes off more like a wuxai rework of The Wizard of Oz. Young Bostonian Jason (Michael Angarano) is magically teleported to 16th-century China by a mystical golden staff that Jason must return to its rightful owner, the imprisoned Monkey King (Jet Li). A trio of misfits (including Jackie Chan and Li doing double duty) join Jason's journey through an Oriental Oz on their way to see the evil Jade (or is it Emerald?) Warlord (Collin Chou), who also covets the staff. The Chan/ Li duel is the film's best five minutes even if it's 10 years too late—but then there's a scene in which Li urinates on Chan's face. Rated PG-13. —NM

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL—Judd Apatow gave his imprimatur to this Jason Segel-scripted comedy about getting over a heartbreak, but it is Segel who is the real star. A Freaks and Geeks grad who now stars in the TV series How I Met Your Mother, Segel bares all and binds the film together, even through its draggy second half. Even if the specter of a dopey Everydude dating a famous celebrity, getting comped the penthouse suite at a Hawaii hotel and then scoring the prettiest girl at the resort is hard to believe, we somehow suspend our disbelief. Rated PG-13. —NM

HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY—The simple charm of Harold and Kumar's original odyssey to White Castle is lost in a sequel that is not as smart as its meta-tableau portends nor as dumb as its puerile humor suggests. Picking up at the end of the last film, our stoner heroes are arrested while flying to Amsterdam and exiled to Gitmo under suspicion they are part of an al-Qaeda-North Korean terrorist cell. They (too) quickly escape and embark on another rowdy road trip, this time to Texas. The comedy is decidedly raw—and uneven—but it skewers our cultural mores and PATRIOT Act-era political regime. In that way, it is not just Harold and Kumar, but all of us, who are still trying to escape from Guantánamo Bay. Rated R. —NM

IRON MAN—Though its efforts to make a contemporary comic-book morality play out of the war in Afghanistan are predictably risible, the summer's first would-be tentpole is several cuts above the norm, thanks to a witty script, Jon Favreau's energetic yet light-handed direction and, especially, Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in the title role, which brings the irreverent savoir faire of James Bond to a conscience-stricken arms manufacturer-slash-playboy. Adapted from the Marvel comic, the special effects-laden action romp boasts a nifty titanium aerodynamic suit for its hero and stellar supporting work from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges, who brings elements of Daddy Warbucks, Dick Cheney and John Huston to the tale's devious baddie. Rated PG-13. —GC

LEATHERHEADS—Though it's set in the very early pro football world of the 1920s, George Clooney's latest directorial effort is less a sports film than a would-be screwball comedy, with Clooney playing an aging footballer matching wits and making whoopee with Renee Zellweger, as a reporter trying to dig dirt on the team's star recruit. Though amiable enough, and with a few choice scenes, the loping movie lacks the verve of great screwball, not to mention any hint of chemistry between its leads. Rated PG-13. —GC

MADE OF HONOR—Yet another slack cut-and-paste rom com, Made of Honor is the reverse of My Best Friend's Wedding. Or, does it aspire as high as It Happened One Night? Surely not. Tom (TV's Patrick Dempsey, whose McDreaminess eludes me) doesn't love Hannah (stick-thin Michelle Monaghan) until she falls for a burly Scotsman on a business trip. Naturally, Tom consents to be her maid of honor to sabotage the wedding from within. This cobwebby plot can work, but with every interesting idea, like having Tom decide to take his duties seriously, the film puts on the brakes. Obviously, the creative directors fell all over themselves to keep even a hint of gayness from tainting Dempsey in a potentially girly situation—he's not MBFW's Rupert Everett, he's straight! As usual in the world of chick flicks, there is the unmotivated pratfall and the naughty word snicker. Why should we care about these dreary people, who are no more real than their cardboard cutouts in the theater lobby? Rated PG-13. —LB

NIM'S ISLAND—In this insipid literary adaptation, Abigail Breslin plays Nim, a precocious 11-year-old sprite living with her marine biologist dad on a South Pacific island. Although they're equipped with Internet access and a satellite phone, when a typhoon strands dad at sea the only person Nim asks for help is renowned pulp novel writer Alexandra "Alex" Rover (Jodie Foster). Rated PG. —Neil Morris

PROM NIGHT—A bad night at the prom with pretty dead girls. Rated PG-13.

THE VISITOR—Not all of us were enamored of the 2003 indie hit The Station Agent, finding it just too pat in its feel-good quirkiness. Director Thomas McCarthy's follow-up looks to be more hard-headed: A burned-out college professor makes an unexpected trip to an unused New York apartment he owns and finds an immigrant couple squatting there. What seems to follow is a tale of regenerationa and a disquisition on what it means to be American. Rated PG-13.
