Opening This Week

AUGUST RUSH—Director Kirsten Sheridan filled Disco Pigs, her first film, with whimsical violence and obsessive romance, but plays it straight and boring with this bloated fairytale. A newborn is sloughed off at a New York boys' home but grows up believing that through music, he will find his parents who, naturally, are a Julliard-trained cellist (Keri Russell) and a rock star (Jonathan Rhys Meyer). The boy, Evan (Freddie Highmore), is a musical prodigy, too, who can beat out symphonies on a guitar and compose concertos from city noises. His parents follow Evan's musical bread crumb all the way back to the Big Apple and reclaim their misplaced (but never forgotten) child in one magical evening. While some may find the film's notion of music as a linkage between human souls entrancing, this cheapened version of Dickens' Oliver Twist pulls all the right heart strings too many times. Rated PG. —KJ

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD—With a gritty urban energy that recalls his own Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and Prince of the City, veteran director Sidney Lumet traces the dreadful consequences of a misbegotten crime mounted by two suburban New York brothers, world-class screw-ups played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke. Though Kelly Masterson's ambitious script relies too heavily on fashionable time-chopping, the film is unique among recent crime dramas for achieving the force of tragedy, and for Hoffman's frighteningly powerful performance. Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei co-star. See review on page 51. Rated R. —GC

DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL—The lives of working class South Asians in the U.K. are celebrated in this sports movie about a down-on-its-luck football team called Southall United. Feisty Arshad Warshi teams with a star player slighted by racist locals (John Abraham, Indian despite his name), to bring the team to glory. Since "Shaan," the name of Arshad's character, means just that, I'm optimistic. Not rated. —LB

ENCHANTED—Amy Adams gives an energetic performance as a cartoon fairy tale princess sent to the real world, but the film doesn't really explore the possibilities of its premise. And how many times can James Marsden not get the girl? See review on page 53. Rated PG. —ZS

HITMAN—The titular video game is adapted into this tepid, uninspired Bourne retread about a ghostly gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 (Timothy Olyphant). Bred at an early age to become an expert assassin, 47 is able to evade legal authorities for years because, as we all know, nothing is as inconspicuous as a six-foot-tall bald guy with a bar code tattooed onto the back of his head. The "plot" has something to do with some criminal conspiracy involving Russian politics, the proverbial hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold (Olga Kurylenko) and Dougray Scott as 47's personal Interpol Javert. A few nifty action sequences from a director named Xavier Gens barely compensate for a lackluster throwaway that overlooks virtually all of 47's VG-developed backstory and somehow managed to escape the February-release wasteland it deserves. Rated R. —NM

I'M NOT THERE—Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan biopic is a cinematic manifestation of its subject—elusive and surreal, yet strangely calculated and manipulative. Six actors, each cast under a different character pseudonym, portray distinct stages of the singer-songwriter's life, with the two strongest segments featuring Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett. Still, while the inherent contradictions of Dylan and this vehicle are undoubtedly intentional, at some point they become less provocative than debilitating. Ultimately, Dylan has always been what he claims to be—a master songwriter and storyteller—and what he will not admit to being—a brilliant, strategic self-marketer. See review on page 53. THE MIST—As an indictment of fractured humanity, writer-director Frank Darabont's third adaptation of a Stephen King story comes about three or four years past the point of relevance. A strange fog envelopes a small Maine village and carries with it strange, bloodthirsty creatures. However, the beseiged villagers' prejudices and distrust devolve into social fragmentation and a slow descent into anarchy, wherein the dangers within the store become almost as perilous as those outside. While tautly constructed and full of thought-provoking potential, the film's presentation is too stagy and lurching, the performances leaden and the dialogue predictable. See review on page 53. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN—Set in 1980 along the desolate Tex-Mex border, the Coen Brothers' fastidiously faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's literary crime novel follows a world-weary sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a cold-blooded killer (Javier Bardem, in an Oscar-bound knockout turn) as they pursue a hapless cowboy (Josh Brolin) who's stumbled across millions in drug money. Faultlessly mounted, with terrific performances and a formal sheen worthy of Hitchcock, the movie only stumbles in its final section, where McCarthy's apocalyptic allegorizing overwhelms dramatic sense. THIS CHRISTMAS—Home for the holidays with the Whitfields, in this writing-and-directing two-fer from the resonantly named Preston Whitmore II. While the plot doesn't promise surprises, the cast includes such live wires as Delroy Lindo, Loretta Devine and Regina King. Rated PG-13.

AMERICAN GANGSTER—With Denzel Washington playing an N.C.-born Harlem drug kingpin of the late '60s/early '70s, and Russell Crowe as the cop chasing him, Ridley Scott wastes loads of star power and his own technical prowess on a tale that plays like a tired mish-mash of much better movies, from The Godfather and Scarface to Superfly. Rated R. —GC

BEE MOVIE—Jerry Seinfeld may headline this honey-basted animated film, but audiences would have benefited from more than the paltry five minutes of screen time dedicated to Chris Rock's acerbic wit. The setting is an entertaining and somewhat educational rendering of a bee's life through the eyes of young Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld), who longs for a life beyond his hive-bound, work-a-bee subsistence. Rated PG. —NM

BELLA—One frantic morning at an upscale Manhattan Mexican restaurant, Nina is fired for being late one too many times. Her pregnancy test has just communicated crisis, but head chef José, a warm hearted dreamboat looking for some cosmic reparations for a past transgression, offers a solution to her dilemma. Eduardo Verástegui and Tammy Blanchard make an emotional connection as the couple, although the plot is a tad soapy, with a single day bringing the couple's separate sagas of repressed grief bubbling to the surface. Still, Bella contains three intrinsically appealing cinematic themes: the cooking and eating of food as a sign of affection, a cross-cultural romance (especially welcome as a sign of solidarity with the burgeoning Latino population) and the healing balm of a loving family, all of which smooth over the "well-made play" clichés. While not particularly pulse-pounding, it will bring a tear to the eye of anyone who has loved a child. Rated PG-13. —LB

BEOWULF—This CGI version of the English 101 mainstay offers a Faustian update on the classic tale of a warrior (Ray Winstone) battling the monster Grendel (Crispin Glover at his most manic) and his mother (interpreted as a naked, 3-D Angelina Jolie). Director Robert Zemeckis has improved the quality of his motion-capture filmmaking since the creepiness of The Polar Express, but the computerized actors still suffer from Botoxed foreheads and unmoving eyebrows. The violence and sexuality makes this inappropriate for kids, and yet it doesn't go far enough to be entertaining for adults. There's a great mature-oriented animated film out there, but this isn't it. Rated PG-13. —ZS

DAN IN REAL LIFE—Hollywood loves to neuter its comedians for the sake of playing artsy over archetype, and with Steve Carell, it started either with Little Miss Sunshine or when they marketed Evan Almighty to evangelical groups. His slow ascent over the shark tank continues with this cloying, derivative dramedy in which he plays Dan, a writer and widower rearing three young daughters. Together they travel to his extended family's annual fall get-together in Rhode Island for a flannel-clad weekend of word games, living room talent shows and pancake breakfasts. Rated PG-13. —NM

THE DARJEELING LIMITED—This film might well be viewed as the anchor leg to Wes Anderson's unofficial Daddy trilogy, steeped in the paradox that while family is ostensibly the strongest of bonds, it is the one human relationship not formed by free association or commonality of personality. This is Anderson's most accessible, poetic and poignant to date. Rated R. —NM

FRED CLAUS—The Halloween candy is starting to disappear, so it must be time for Christmas movies. In this one, Santa invites his ne'er do-well brother to work in his toy shop. What follows proposes to be funny and heartwarming. Still, there's an impressive array of talent here that's generally associated with more ambitious fare: Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Rachel Weisz, Kevin Spacey and director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). Rated PG.

INTO THE WILD—Sean Penn delivers the finest film of his directorial career in telling the fascinating true story of Chris McCandless, a young man who, after graduating college in 1990, spends two years bumming around America before disappearing into the Alaskan wilderness. Evoking everything from The Odyssey to Easy Rider, this tale of a self-imposed initiatory ordeal will split viewers according to whether the main character is found sympathetic or not. But it asks all the right questions, and Penn's energetic direction is constantly inventive. Emile Hirsch gives a brave, ambitious performance as Chris. Rated R. —GC

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL— Ryan Gosling is a long way from his romantic turn in The Notebook as Lars, a painfully repressed young man who orders a "RealDoll" off the Internet and talks to it as though she's real, forcing his small town to cater to his delusion. The film avoids all sexual angles, instead veering between a sitcom update of Harvey and a darker character study of Lars' pain. It could be this fall's Little Miss Sunshine—take that as you will. Rated PG-13. —ZS

LIONS FOR LAMBS—Amid the torrent of war-on-terror fare currently coming out of Hollywood, this is the singularly sanctimonious, heavy-handed and counterproductive of the lot. The three-act screenplay rotates randomly from the congressional office of Sen. Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise) to that of university professor Stephen Malley (director Robert Redford) to an Afghan mountaintop where two Army Rangers (Michael Peña and Derek Luke) are pinned down by approaching Taliban rebels. The sad irony of this "I-told-you-so" talkathon, in which Hollywood lefties controlled the plot and every word of dialogue, is that it unintentionally confirms the reasons why the Democratic Party keep seeing presidential elections slip from their grasp. Rated R. —NM

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA—Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote the novel about love and devotion through a lifetime that inspired this film, and neither Antonio Banderas nor Salma Hayek is in it. These facts alone are cause for hope. Rated R.

MICHAEL CLAYTON—Playing a bottom-drawer Manhattan lawyer sucked into a web of corporate corruption, George Clooney gives a dead-on performance that may well be what gets this riveting, downbeat thriller to the Oscars. Yet the film's most striking virtue is Tony Gilroy's inventive script, which withholds just enough information to leave the viewer both off-center and thoroughly absorbed. Rated R. —GC

MR. MAGORIUM'S WONDER EMPORIUM—A film too aware of its role as a cinematic ode to children's literature and whimsical fantasy, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is one of the weaker offerings of children's film fare for the holiday season. The plot is simplistic: Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman), 243-year-old, bushy-browed toy impresario, decides it's time for his departure from earth (read: death) and must leave his magical shop in the capable, but unwilling hands of Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman), his 22-year-old assistant. The rest of the film focuses on the will she, won't she element, with a few soulful impartations of wisdom from the wacky Magorium and a handful of tired references to Willy Wonka. A less-than-hearty directorial debut for screenwriter Zack Helm of Stranger than Fiction fame. Rated G. —KJ

OM SHANTI OM—The King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, earns his moniker because he can pack a theater with gleeful patrons like nobody else can. Paired with choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan, who harbors a mad movie love both for the conventions of Hindi cinema and for her leading man, Om Shanti Om delivers the glitter and glamour, the comedy and thrills, religion and the supernatural, mother love, fashion and eye-popping production numbers in proper masala fashion. Not rated. —LB

SAW IV—What began as a hyper-stylized torture film with a psycho-geek charisma brought about by Jigsaw, its illogical but pious moral engineer/ serial killer, has now been reduced to a sticky melodrama that spurts scenes of torture and mutilation like a MTV-metal video shocks and growls. Rated R. —KJ

TYLER PERRY'S WHY DID I GET MARRIED?—Much of what Tyler Perry deems wrong with marriage has to do with powerful women who speak their minds and clock in too many hours in the office—and never mind the men who cheat on their women or demand an open and available womb. Rated PG-13. —KJ
