Festival season

Mergefest was just the beginning

Merge Fest is over, so what's next? Plenty. It's music festival season and there are several coming up this month all over the Triangle. This week, the fine folks at Guitartown (www.guitartown.org) gear up Twang Bang '04--a one-night bill at The Pour House Music Hall in Raleigh on Saturday, Aug. 7 with (in order of appearance) Randy Whitt & The Grits, Old Habits, Frog Holler, Hooverville, Steve Howell Band and Hank Sinatra. Starts at 7 p.m. with free 'cue and sides from 6-8 p.m.

Later this month, Durham gets its due with the annual Durham Music Festival (www.durhamdada.org/dmfe/) Aug. 20-22. More than 20 bands--mostly local acts--are signed up, including Richard Buckner, The Butchies, Des Ark, Dom Casual, El Guapo, Jett Rink, Mosadi Music, The Mountain Goats, North Elementary, The Rosebuds, Chris Stamey, Wigg Report and Work Clothes.

Not to be left out, Chapel Hill gets its annual dose of Sleazefest the same weekend. The 10th edition of the Friday-Saturday-Sunday garage-a-trois includes hosts Southern Culture on the Skids, of course, along with The Fleshtones, The Woggles, Dexter Romweber, The Tearjerkers, Sons of Hercules, The Swingin' Neckbreakers, Nine Pound Hammer, ANTiSEEN, Red Hot Poker Dots, Valiant Thor, Fake Swedish and DJ Marco. Shows are at Local 506 and The Cave.

But wait, there's more! August closes out with Ozzfest--14 hours of the likes of Black Sabbath, Superjoint Ritual, Slayer and Judas Priest. Now that's a hot month. Be sure to stay hydrated.

Speaking of festivals, don't forget ours--The First Annual Indy Music Awards. We'll have details on the Oct. 2 extravaganza in next week's paper, which, by the way, is also our second annual Band Guide. Confused? Check out our music site indymusicawards.com to get it straight.

Changes
A quick word on our new music section. If you're looking for Get Outs, they'll be back next week. Until then, check our new 8 Days a Week for a breakdown of top shows in your area. Next week, we also kick off the Charts section in our music calendar. Among other tidbits, Charts will feature playlists from shows and stations that feature local music.
