I freelance for three western newspapers, and I can tell you that those editors wouldn't have accepted this kind of story for their paper, and probably wouldn't have allowed me to write for them again.
The inclusion of one sentence connecting the young man to his father would have sufficed and let the readers decide how important that part of the story was.
If this is a true blog, separated from hard news in some way, then this kind of subjective writing makes more sense. But if this newspaper is trying to pass this off as journalism .....
