Explorers Club, North Elementary, Wigg Report

When: Sat., Feb. 11, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Charleston's Explorers Club isn't a "cool" band. Even in 2008, when they released the pitch-perfect Beach Boys homage Freedom Wind, it felt so much like a classic LP that it was more comforting than exciting. The new album, Grand Hotel, offers more of a hodgepodge in its influences, but none of them are particularly hip. The deep warble and blasting horns and organ of "Anticipatin'" conjure visions of Neil Diamond, and the loungey sway of "It's No Use" points to Burt Bacharach. Sound lame? It's not. The band's warm melodies and lush harmonies are a winning combination. North Elementary and The Wigg Report open. —Jordan Lawrence
