Euthanasia training rebuffed

Thanks to Lisa Sorg for her recent article on animal euthanasia and the gas chamber debate ("Animal euthanasia rules languish over language," Aug. 13). I would like to respond to Pat Sanford's quote concerning animal welfare groups not providing euthanasia training alternatives to local animal control in a previous article in the Indy ("Use of gassing challenged," Aug. 8, 2007).

While this may have been true in the past, it is no longer an accurate statement. In December 2007 Greg Biffle and I, with more than 200 Friends of the Animals supporters, made a presentation to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners. We offered to underwrite the cost of switching from the gas chamber to using only euthanasia by injection. We also offered to fund euthanasia training by a national group such as the National Animal Control Association or the Humane Society of the United States. We have not as yet received a reply from the Board of Commissioners or Iredell County Animal Control.
