Esben & the Witch, Heliotropes

When: Sun., April 14, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $9-11

Gothic rock—the subgenre that can claim The Cure's Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux as mascara-smeared parents—has waxed and waned in popularity during the last 30 years, but the form has persisted. One of its newest and most fervent standard-bearers is UK trio Esben & the Witch, named after a Danish fairy tale (of course). The group's ethereal grandeur and mournful musings—as evidenced on the new Wash the Sins Not Only the Face—are the closest any musical endeavor has come in quite some time to re-creating both the sound and the spirit of the genre's gossamer-winged glory days. With Heliotropes. —David Raposa
