Two new musical works premiere in a double bill this weekend, both conducted by George Lam of the Duke University Department of Music. The first is Kathleen Bader's Tentative Embrace, a suite for 12 musicians that expresses the inspiration she found in the Sonora Desert. Two music quartets—one string, one woodwind—join four opera singers in a five-movement piece that also includes spoken texts and recorded soundscapes. The second half of the bill is Persistence of Smoke, a "documentary opera," which is appropriate given the film festival that is running this weekend in Durham. It's the work of composer Lam and playwright John Justice, and it explores the legacy of the Liggett & Myers tobacco company in Durham. Jay O'Berski directs the dramatic component of this work. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. on the second floor of Golden Belt's Building 2. Admission is free. —David Fellerath
