carrboro Gavin DeGraw, Val Emmich, Michael Tolcher Cat's Cradle-- These three singer-songwriters need a bit more production on their major-label debuts about as badly as W needs a bit of assistance sporting any one of his signature smirks. Production moves aside, there is enough talent here to warrant a Tuesday night Cradle visit, as DeGraw carries the spirit of Marvin Gaye in his soul and a picture of Steve Perry on his nightstand, while Georgia boy Tolcher pleasantly owes stylistic debts to Willie Nelson and Run-DMC. Emmich, though, is an older, masculine Avril in a hipster hoodie. --GC
